## Summary

A shopper types "best pellet grill 2026" into ChatGPT because she wants this year's models, not last year's. The year does more than date the answer. It sends ChatGPT to a different set of websites, and it often changes which grill comes out on top.

The websites ChatGPT cites are the ones that get the link, the visit and the credit for its recommendation. Buyers add the year to searches all the time, so if the year reshuffles those citations, a publisher or brand that shows up for "best X" can lose its place for "best X 2026", and the reverse.

Adding the year changes what ChatGPT reads. ChatGPT's sources shift even when nothing changes: the identical question asked twice cites a different set 82.2% of the time. The year adds a clear effect on top of that, raising the change to **96.3%**, replacing 69.1% of cited websites instead of 51.8%, and moving the top pick about 11 points more often than chance.

## What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, with web search switched on and from a US location, 500 "best product" questions. Each was asked in its plain form ("What is the best X?"), with "2026" added, and in five other reworded versions (a detailed version, "on a budget", "please", "top" instead of "best" and a typo). Every version was asked twice, giving 6,992 answers.

For each plain and "2026" pair we compared the top pick, the first product ChatGPT recommends, and the set of websites cited as sources. The share of websites replaced is the average share of the combined source list that appears in only one of the two answers. Because ChatGPT does not repeat itself exactly, we also compared the plain question with itself across the two rounds. That baseline is the amount of change that happens by chance; the effect of the year is the gap above it.

## The year swaps more sources than chance alone

96.3%

of ChatGPT answers cite a different set of websites when "2026" is added to the product question.

ChatGPT's source list is fluid. Between two identical questions, 51.8% of cited websites are replaced on average, and the full list changes 82.2% of the time. Adding "2026" pushes both measures up: 69.1% of cited websites are replaced and the list changes 96.3% of the time, 14 points more. The year also widens the search slightly, from 3.10 websites per answer to 3.48.

| Measure | Same question asked twice | With "2026" added |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cited websites changed | 82.2% | 96.3% |
| Share of cited websites replaced | 51.8% | 69.1% |
| Top pick changed | 54.6% | 65.4% |
| Websites cited per answer | 3.10 | 3.48 |

The recommendation moves with the sources. The top pick changes 65.4% of the time with the year, against 54.6% for a simple repeat. For "best TV streaming service", the plain answer led with Netflix and the 2026 answer with YouTube TV. For pellet grills, the Weber Searwood XL 600 gave way to the Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24. For push mowers, a Toro Recycler gave way to an EGO Power+ 600 series model.

ChatGPT takes the year literally. 99.4% of its answers to year questions mention 2026, against 55% of answers to the plain question, and they run longer, about 277 words against 216.

## Roundup publishers gain with the year

The year shifts ChatGPT's sources toward publishers that update big "best of" roundups every year. Tom's Guide rises from 9.7% of answers to 14%, and TechRadar from 5.2% to 8.9%, the largest relative jump of the most-cited sites. Consumer Reports, NerdWallet and Wired each gain between one and three points.

News and general publishers break in as well. The Wall Street Journal, Healthline and NBC News enter the ten most-cited websites for year questions, and none of them is in the top ten for the plain version. When a buyer signals that timing matters, ChatGPT looks for pages that are visibly current.

## What this means for publishers and brands

Treat freshness as a ranking signal for AI answers. Year-tagged questions pull in the publishers that refresh their roundups every year, so keep your buying guides and comparison pages current, show a real update date, name the current model year, and refresh them when the calendar turns. A page last touched two years ago is poorly placed for "best X 2026".

Measure the way ChatGPT behaves. Because its sources change 82.2% of the time on an identical repeat, one check says little. Ask your buyers' questions with and without the year, several times, and compare how often you are cited in each version before deciding a content change worked. An ai seo company (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/ai-seo-services) can run those repeated checks and track your citations over time.
