## Summary

A homeowner hears a contractor recommend a Bryant furnace and asks ChatGPT, "What is Bryant?" The answer explains the history of the surname. A shopper asks about Windsor, a clothing retailer, and reads about Windsor Castle. The customer was ready to learn about the brand, and the AI answer talked about something else.

That matters because "What is [brand]?" is often the first thing a new customer asks. If the answer describes a person or a town, the customer either asks again or moves on, and the brand has lost the chance to introduce itself. For an affected brand, the effect is total: the answer is about someone else.

Most brands are recognized, but not all. AI engines treat a brand name as ambiguous or unknown in 2.8% of "What is [brand]?" answers, and **7.2%** of top brands, one in 14, were confused at least once. The brands at risk share a trait: their names are common words, surnames or places.

## What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Gemini "What is [brand]?" for each of 500 brands, twice on each engine, for 2,000 answers. The brands are the 500 whose websites appear most often in Google results for 20,000 common searches, grouped into 22 industries such as HVAC, insurance, banking, weddings and solar.

An answer counts as confused when it says the name could refer to several things, asks which one is meant, or says it cannot find the brand. We then counted confused answers by engine, brand and industry, and read each one to see what the engine thought the name meant.

## Brands with common-word names get mixed up

7.2%

of top brands are confused by AI at least once.

The answers show how the confusion happens. Asked about Lennox, ChatGPT explained that Lennox is a Scottish surname and given name. Asked about Windsor, it described the English town and its castle. Asked about Ferguson, it described the surname and several places of that name. Asked about Bryant, it explained the surname's roots. None of those answers was wrong about the word. They were wrong about the company the person asking most likely meant.

Not every confused name is a surname. Short acronyms such as SCE, a California electric utility, and DCU, a credit union, were each confused twice, as were Zola and Anthem, names that are also ordinary words or names of other things. A name that means something else to most people needs extra context before an AI engine connects it to a company.

## ChatGPT confuses brands slightly more often than Gemini

3.1%

of ChatGPT's answers to "What is [brand]?" treat the brand as ambiguous or unknown.

ChatGPT confused a brand in 3.1% of its answers and Gemini in 2.5%. Overall, 2.8% of answers, about one in 36, missed the brand. The engines did not always struggle with the same names: of the 36 brands confused at least once, 7 were confused by both engines, so a brand can be recognized on one engine and misread on the other.

For most brands a confused answer is a one-off, but for some it repeats: Bryant in every answer, and five brands in three of four. For those companies the problem is the name itself, and it shows up whichever engine or day the customer asks.

## HVAC and wedding brand names are most exposed

By industry, roofing brands were confused in 12.5% of answers and HVAC brands in 8.8%, three times the overall rate. In HVAC, Bryant (4 answers) and Ferguson (3) led, with single cases for Carrier, Lennox and LG. Wedding brands follow at 5.7%, where the jewelers Tiffany and Kay were confused three times each.

## What this means for brands with common names

Test your own name. Ask ChatGPT and Gemini "What is [your brand]?" and check whether the answer is about you. If it is not, strengthen the signals that link the name to your company: your brand name together with your category in page titles and on your About page, a Wikipedia or Wikidata entry where you qualify, and press coverage that uses your full name.

Pair the name with the category everywhere you control the words, for example "Bryant heating and cooling" rather than "Bryant". That is the context an AI engine needs to pick the right meaning, and it helps the customer who types your name with a category too.

Then retest after each change, on both engines. Working with an ai seo company (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/ai-seo-services) that checks how AI engines describe your brand helps you build the signals that let them recognize it.
