Perplexity cites at least one government, military or university website in **58.1%** of its answers to everyday questions, ahead of ChatGPT at 49.8% and far ahead of Google AI Mode at 26.7%. On tax questions, 71.7% of AI answers cite an official source.

Analysis of 25,940 AI answers · answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features, September 2026

## Key Findings

1. 1. **58.1%** of Perplexity answers cite at least one .gov, .edu or .mil website, the highest rate of five AI engines. Copy stat
2. 2. ChatGPT cites a government, military or university website in **49.8%** of its answers, almost twice Google AI Mode's 26.7%. Copy stat
3. 3. Gemini cites a .gov, .edu or .mil website in **6.3%** of its answers, rising to 16.3% of the Gemini answers that cite any source at all. Copy stat
4. 4. **71.7%** of AI answers to tax questions cite a government or university website, against 2.2% of AI answers to shopping questions. Copy stat
5. 5. The National Institutes of Health site, nih.gov, is cited in **4.7%** of all AI answers, more than twice the next official source, consumerfinance.gov, at 2.2%. Copy stat

## Summary

Ask Perplexity an everyday question and, more often than not, the sources under its answer include a government agency or a university. Ask Google AI Mode the same question and about three answers in four cite no official source at all. The two answers may say the same thing, but they send readers to very different places.

For a business, official sources are the competition you cannot outrank on authority. When an AI engine answers a question about taxes, health or education, a government agency or university page is often the first source it reaches for. Knowing which engines do this, and on which topics, tells you where your pages compete with other companies and where they compete with the government.

Across all five engines, 32.6% of answers cite at least one government, military or university website. Perplexity leads at **58.1%** and ChatGPT follows at 49.8%, so about half of the answers from these two engines point to an official source. Google AI Overviews (35.3%), Google AI Mode (26.7%) and Gemini (6.3%) do so far less often.

## What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we asked the same 2,984 general questions, on topics from taxes and health to shopping and software, to five AI engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews (the AI summary that appears above Google's search results). Every question was asked from a US location, producing 25,940 answers, and we recorded every source each answer cited.

An answer counts as citing an official source when at least one of its cited web addresses ends in .gov (US government), .mil (US military) or .edu (accredited US colleges and universities). A citation is a source link an AI engine shows with its answer. Each rate is a share of answers, so an answer citing three government pages counts once.

## Perplexity and ChatGPT cite official sources in half their answers

58.1%

of Perplexity answers cite at least one .gov, .edu or .mil website.

Perplexity and ChatGPT behave most like research assistants. Perplexity cites an official source in 58.1% of its answers and ChatGPT in 49.8%, so for most everyday questions on these two engines, a government agency or university sits somewhere in the source list. ChatGPT reaches nearly 50% with about four sources per answer.

| AI engine | Answers citing a .gov, .edu or .mil site | Among answers citing any source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Perplexity | 58.1% | 58.1% |
| ChatGPT | 49.8% | 50.9% |
| Google AI Overviews | 35.3% | 35.8% |
| Google AI Mode | 26.7% | 35.9% |
| Gemini | 6.3% | 16.3% |
| All engines | 32.6% | |

For a business, this changes who you are competing with on these two engines. A page explaining a tax rule or a health condition is weighed against the official guidance on the same subject, and the official page brings an authority no company site can match. The winning move is to work with that guidance, not against it.

## Google's AI features lean on the commercial web

Google AI Overviews cites an official source in 35.3% of its answers and Google AI Mode in 26.7%. Looking only at answers that cite any source, both engines land at about 36%, well below Perplexity and ChatGPT. Google's AI products draw heavily from the pages that rank in Google Search, where publishers, companies, video and forums fill most of the results.

Gemini sits at the bottom at 6.3%, largely because it often shows no sources at all: it cited something in 2,313 of its 5,968 answers, about four in ten. Among the Gemini answers that do cite sources, 16.3% include a government, military or university site, still the lowest rate of the five engines.

## Taxes, weather and health rely most on official sources

The topic makes a bigger difference than the engine. 71.7% of AI answers to tax questions cite an official source, more than seven in ten. Weather (56.9%), health (54.5%), education (54%) and fitness (52.2%) also sit above half, and mental health is close at 48.4%. These are subjects where a government agency or a university is the primary authority: tax rules, forecasts, public health guidance and research.

Commercial topics are a different world. Travel and pets questions cite an official source in 12.5% of answers, software in 7.1%, tech in 5.7% and shopping in 2.2%. A tax question is more than 30 times as likely as a shopping question to produce an answer that cites the government or a university.

## The National Institutes of Health is the most-cited official source

Across all 25,940 answers, the official site cited most often is nih.gov, the National Institutes of Health, in 4.7% of answers. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's consumerfinance.gov follows at 2.2%, then harvard.edu and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's cdc.gov at 1.9% each, and cornell.edu and the IRS's irs.gov at 1.4% each.

The list mirrors the topic results. Health and money questions pull in medical research and consumer finance guidance, and two universities make the top six. These are the pages a business in health, finance or education is most often cited next to.

## What this means for businesses in expert fields

If you work in health, finance, education or taxes, expect AI engines, especially Perplexity and ChatGPT, to pair your content with official sources or to answer from them directly. Link to the relevant government guidance on your pages and explain what it means for your customers: the practical steps, the local detail, the worked example. That makes your page a useful companion to the official source rather than a weaker copy of it.

In shopping, software and tech, official sources rarely appear, so your competition for citations is other brands and publishers, and the usual levers apply: clear answers, specifications, prices and evidence from real customers.

Then check the engines your customers use. Ask them the questions your customers ask and note which sources each engine cites. As an ai seo company (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/ai-seo-services), Suff Digital tracks those citations and helps businesses in expert fields build pages that earn a place next to official sources.
