Copy stat ## Summary A small business owner asks an AI engine whether Florida has sales tax, then how much New York takes from a paycheck, then when quarterly estimated taxes are due. Three answers arrive in seconds. The federal question about estimated taxes is the one most likely to link to the IRS; the two state questions lean on tax software companies, policy researchers and personal finance sites. Tax answers matter because mistakes cost money: a wrong rate, a missed deadline or a misunderstood deduction turns into penalties. The sources behind an AI answer are how a reader checks it. For accountants and tax preparers, they also show who AI engines treat as the authority on the questions clients ask every day. On federal tax questions, AI engines cite the IRS in **76.4%** of answers. Most of the tax questions people search, though, are about state income tax, sales tax and property tax, and those answers come from other sources, so across every tax question 32% of AI answers cite irs.gov. ## What we measured On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews 136 tax questions drawn from real search demand, twice each from a US location, and collected 1,012 answers with every source they cited. 6.7% of the answers cited no source at all. An answer cites the IRS when at least one of its sources is a page on irs.gov. Federal tax questions are the 57 questions that do not mention a state, sales tax or property tax. The ranking of other sources uses the 944 answers that cite at least one source, so a site's share is the percentage of sourced answers that cite it. ## Federal tax questions go to the IRS 76.4% of AI answers to federal tax questions cite irs.gov. On the 57 federal tax questions, about three in four AI answers cite irs.gov. When the question is about federal tax, the engines go to the agency that sets the rules. For a reader, that means federal answers are usually anchored to the IRS, while state and sales tax answers rest on whichever publishers have written the clearest page. ## State and sales tax questions draw on other sources 32% of AI answers to all tax questions, federal and state, cite the IRS website. The overall figure is lower because of what people ask. 79 of the 136 questions are about state income tax, sales tax or property tax, subjects the IRS does not cover. Measured against answers that cite at least one source, irs.gov appears in 34.7%, still the single most-cited website in AI tax answers. For those state questions, AI engines turn to other publishers, and state revenue departments are not the main ones: the most-cited, texas.gov, appears in 4.6% of sourced answers. ## ChatGPT cites the IRS most, and Gemini least ChatGPT cites irs.gov in 41.2% of its tax answers, about four in ten. Google AI Mode (33.5%) and Google AI Overviews (31.1%) sit near one in three. Gemini cites the IRS in 23.5% of tax answers, fewer than one in four. The Tax Foundation, a tax policy nonprofit, is cited in 19.9% of sourced tax answers, about one in five. Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, follows at 18.6% and H&R Block at 13.6%. Stripe and Avalara, both sales tax software providers, also make the top ten. Companies with large, well-organized tax content libraries have become the reference AI engines use for the questions the IRS does not answer. ## What this means for tax preparers and accounting firms The questions people ask about taxes are often local: "does Florida have sales tax", "how much is NY tax", "what state has the lowest taxes". Those answers do not come from the IRS; they come mostly from national brands with large content libraries. A firm that publishes clear, current state tax guides has a real opening. The same goes for sales tax: two of the top ten sources are sales tax software companies, which shows there is room for more firms to compete on these questions. Date tax pages and update them each filing season. AI engines cite pages that answer the question in plain terms, with rates, thresholds and deadlines stated clearly.
