## Summary
A warning light comes on and a driver searches for an auto repair shop nearby. Two shops have similar ratings. One links to a website with its services, prices and hours; the other offers only a phone number. The driver taps through to the first, sees it handles their make of car, and books.
For an auto repair shop, the Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows a business's reviews, star rating, hours, phone number and website in Google Search and Maps, is where most customers start. A linked website lets a driver check services and trust signals before calling, and gives Google a second source that confirms what the shop does.
Half of auto repair shops skip it. **49.9%** of shop profiles link no website, against a 35.1% average across 18 categories, the widest gap of any profile field. It shows in the rankings: in Google's top three map results for auto repair, 76.2% of shops link a website, against 63.9% of shops ranked 4 to 20. On reviews, auto repair shops are ahead of most businesses, but more than half never reply to them.
## What we measured
We used two samples of US auto repair shops, collected on September 23, 2026. The first is 728 auto repair shop Google Business Profiles, where we recorded the number of reviews, star rating, website, opening hours, description, claim status, business categories and photos. The second is 551 shops with at least one review, for which we collected up to 20 of their newest Google reviews, 8,786 in all, with each review's star rating, text and any owner reply. We compare every auto repair figure with the average of the 18 local business categories in the same study.
A profile has no website when it links none. A profile is unclaimed when no owner has verified it with Google, so the business cannot edit the listing. A shop "never replied" when none of its 20 newest reviews has a reply from the owner. Negative reviews are one- and two-star reviews. The median is the middle business: half have more, half have fewer. The 18-category average is the simple average of the 18 category figures.
## Half of auto repair shops have no website
49.9%
of auto repair shop Google Business Profiles link no website.
That is almost 15 points above the 35.1% average across 18 categories. The description is the second gap: 48.6% of shop profiles have none, against 43.9%. On the other basics, shops are close to or better than average: 31.3% are unclaimed against 29.2%, and 24.9% list no opening hours against 28.6%. The median shop profile has 7 photos, against a median of 18.

The missing website costs shops in the map. In a separate Suff Digital study of 3,160 Google Maps searches across 79 US cities, 76.2% of the top three results for "auto repair shop" linked a website, against 63.9% of shops ranked 4 to 20, the widest website gap of 20 services. Top-three shops also had a median of 167 reviews, against 106 below them. 82.7% of top-three names include the service word, chains held 7.4% of top-three spots, and adding "near me" changed the top three in 51.9% of city searches.
## Auto repair shops collect more reviews than most
41.5% of auto repair shop profiles have fewer than 20 Google reviews, 4th lowest of 18 categories and well below the 58.2% average. The median shop has 31 reviews, against a median of 27 across categories, 27.2% have 100 or more, and 9.8% have none, against 18.3%.

Claimed shop profiles have a median of 56 reviews against 8 for unclaimed ones. Ratings match other businesses at 4.51 stars against 4.52, with 11.9% below 4 stars, though 18% hold a perfect 5.0, half the 35.7% average, as more reviews make a perfect score harder to keep. Among shops with 20 or fewer lifetime reviews, review volume fell 14.4% over the last 12 months compared with the year before, and 15.7% received at least a third of their reviews in a single month.
## Most auto repair shops leave every recent review unanswered
55.7% of auto repair shops never replied to any of their 20 newest reviews, against a 52.8% average and 8th highest of 18 categories. Across all recent shop reviews, 30.7% carry an owner reply, against 40.5% on average, and shops rank 15th of 18 on that measure. Those who reply take 3.9 days on average, with a median of 3 days.

Shops reply to 25.2% of one- and two-star reviews, against 32.3% of five-star reviews, and rank 14th of 18 on replies to negative reviews. The busiest shops reply most: 63.1% of shop reviews from the last 30 days have a reply, above the 55.3% average. Across all 18 categories, 20.5% of businesses with 200 or more reviews never reply, against 81.7% of businesses with fewer than 10.
## Price drives one-star auto repair reviews
Of English-language one-star reviews of auto repair shops, 39.4% mention price or cost and 17.7% mention rude or unprofessional staff. A repair bill is hard for a driver to check: they cannot see the worn part or judge the labor time, so a total higher than expected reads as being overcharged.
Happy customers recommend their shop: of five-star shop reviews, 24.9% use the word "recommend", 12.4% say "professional" and 11.1% say "friendly". Shop reviews from the last 12 months average 39.8 words, enough for a customer to explain what was fixed and what it cost.
## What this means for auto repair shops
Link a website from your Google Business Profile. A simple site with your services, the makes you work on, your hours, your warranty and your reviews gives drivers a reason to call you over the shop without one, and gives Google more to go on. Then write a profile description that says the same in plain language, using most of the 750 characters Google allows.
Take the surprise out of the bill. Give written estimates, call before doing any work beyond the estimate, and show customers the old parts. When a price complaint lands, reply with the facts: what was quoted, what the technician found and why the bill changed.
