## Summary

A company moves its website to a new design. Months later, its homepage has slipped out of Google's results for its own brand name. The cause is one line of code the developers copied from the staging site: a canonical tag telling Google that the real homepage lives at a test address.

A canonical tag is a line in a page's code that tells Google which URL is the main version of that page, so that copies and variants do not compete with it. On a homepage it should nearly always point to the homepage itself. When it points somewhere else, the site is telling Google to index and rank a different page instead, and the most linked page on the site can drop out of results.

**18.3%** of the canonical tags on the homepages of the 500,000 most visited websites point to a different URL, almost one in five. 7.1% point to another website entirely. A further 46.7% of these homepages have no canonical tag, leaving Google to choose the main version itself.

## What we measured

We used the September 2026 HTTP Archive, a public dataset that tests millions of websites every month, and read the homepage code of the 500,000 most visited websites, 384,602 homepages in all. We recorded whether each homepage had a canonical tag and compared the URL in the tag with the homepage's own URL. We then grouped sites by popularity using Google's Chrome UX Report.

A canonical tag "points elsewhere" when its URL leads to a different page from the homepage. Differences that still lead to the same page, such as http versus https, the www prefix, a trailing slash or capital letters, count as pointing to itself. A canonical points to a different website when the address in the tag has a different domain name. 203,417 homepages have a usable canonical tag, and the shares of tags pointing elsewhere are calculated from those.

## One in five homepage canonicals points away

18.3%

of homepage canonical tags on the 500,000 most visited websites point Google to a different URL.

Among homepages with a usable canonical tag, 166,248 point to themselves and 37,169 point somewhere else. Of those, 14,452 name a different website entirely, 7.1% of all usable tags. That is the riskiest case, because it asks Google to credit the homepage's links and reputation to another domain, such as an old domain, a staging server or a sister site.

| Site popularity | Canonicals pointing elsewhere | Pointing to a different website | Empty or invalid |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Top 10,000 sites | 17.3% | 324 | 33 |
| Ranked 10,000 to 500,000 | 18.3% | 14,128 | 1,529 |
| All 500,000 most visited sites | 18.3% | 14,452 | 1,562 |

A bigger team does not change the rate much. The 10,000 most visited sites point their homepage canonical elsewhere 17.3% of the time, one point below the rest. Another 1,562 canonical tags are empty or contain an address that is not valid, which gives Google an instruction it cannot follow.

Wrong canonicals typically arrive with change: a migration to a new domain, a redesign built on a staging site, or a template copied from another project. The tag is invisible on the page itself, so nobody notices until rankings move.

## Almost half of top sites skip the canonical tag

53.3% of the homepages of the 500,000 most visited websites have a canonical tag, so 46.7% have none. The tag is a cheap guard against the many versions of a homepage URL that build up over time, such as links with tracking codes or mixed http and https links, and without it Google has to decide on its own which version is the main one.

The most visited sites use the tag more: 66.7% of the top 10,000 homepages have one, against 53% of sites ranked 10,000 to 500,000. Using the tag more often does not mean using it correctly, though, since the top sites point it elsewhere at almost the same rate.

## What this means for site owners and SEO teams

View the source of your homepage and find the line that contains rel="canonical". It should show your preferred homepage address. If it names a staging server, an old domain or an inner page, fix it first, then check your main templates the same way.

If the canonical points elsewhere on purpose, confirm that the target page loads normally and is allowed in Google's index. Make canonical checks part of every migration and redesign launch, since that is when the wrong address is most likely to slip in. If your homepage has no canonical tag, add one that points to itself.

Our technical seo services (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/technical-seo-services) check canonical tags across every template before and after a site change, so the homepage never tells Google to rank the wrong page.
