Its hidden searches, the queries it sends to the web on its own before answering, show something different. It asks for "best 2026" roundups, official pages and specific brands, and not once in 602 searches does it ask for Reddit. That matters for where brands spend their effort. A great deal of AI-visibility advice now centers on seeding Reddit and piling up reviews. If ChatGPT's searches do not ask for either by name, those sources have to surface through the ordinary searches it does run, such as "best robot vacuum 2026". **0** of 602 hidden searches mention Reddit, and 7.5% include "review" or "reviews". Reviews matter more on shopping questions, where 17% of hidden searches ask for them, but even there fewer than one search in five does. ## What we measured On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, with web search switched on and from a US location, a set of general questions, "best product" questions, industry questions and questions about health, money and legal matters. For 408 of the answers we captured the hidden searches ChatGPT ran in the background to write them, 602 in all. We checked every hidden search for five kinds of added word: "review" or "reviews"; "reddit"; "best"; "vs" or "compare"; and official or website names, which covers the word "official", named organizations and site: searches that look inside one website. We compared the rates across all questions and for "best product" questions alone. ## Reviews are a minority, Reddit is absent 0 of 602 hidden ChatGPT searches mention Reddit. Reddit never appears in ChatGPT's searches, even on product questions. The most frequent added word is "best", in 24.3% of hidden searches, followed by official or website names at 18.4%. Review words come third at 7.5%, and comparison words are rare at 1.2%. "Official" alone appears in 69 of 602 searches. The named sources are mostly government agencies: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the USDA in 11 searches each, the NIH and the CDC in 10 each, the FDIC and the SEC in 6 each. Among review publishers, Wirecutter (5) and Consumer Reports (3) are the most named, and 32 searches look inside one website directly. ## Product questions ask for reviews more often 17% of ChatGPT's hidden searches for "best product" questions include "reviews". On shopping questions reviews matter more, at about one search in six against one in 13 overall. ChatGPT adds "reviews" to a "best" search along with the year and the product's key features, as in "best gaming monitor 2026 OLED 4K 240Hz reviews". Review content still matters on product questions, where one hidden search in six asks for it, so keep product reviews current, dated and easy for search engines to find. Reddit's influence on ChatGPT does not come from ChatGPT asking for it by name. Reddit threads have to surface through the ordinary searches ChatGPT runs, such as "best X 2026", so treat Reddit as one route among many rather than the strategy.
