## Summary
A small specialist site gets a trickle of visitors from Google, a few dozen a month. Its owner assumes AI search is out of reach too, since AI engines are said to lean on the sites that already win on Google. Then a customer mentions finding the site through a ChatGPT answer.
How much Google traffic a site needs before AI engines will cite it is a real question for small businesses and niche publishers. Most of them will never compete with national brands for broad search terms. If AI engines only cite sites that already have big Google audiences, AI search offers them nothing new.
They do not. **7.5%** of the 10,000 websites AI engines cite most get fewer than 100 Google visits a month, and ChatGPT sends 7.9% of its citations to them, far more than any other engine. The bulk of citations still goes to large sites: those with over a million monthly visits collect 75.1% of AI citations.
## What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we collected every source cited in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews (the AI summary that appears above Google's search results) to 7,354 questions asked from a US location. We counted AI citations per website and kept the 10,000 websites cited most often.
For each website we recorded its estimated monthly US organic Google traffic: the number of visits it gets each month from people clicking its listings in Google's regular search results. We grouped websites into traffic bands and compared each band's share of cited websites with its share of AI citations. The median is the middle website: half get more traffic, half less.
## ChatGPT reaches deepest into low-traffic sites

ChatGPT is the engine most willing to cite a site Google searchers barely see. 7.9% of its citations go to websites with fewer than 100 monthly Google visits, six times the rate of Gemini and Google AI Overviews (1.2% each) and five times Google AI Mode (1.6%). Perplexity sits at 1.4%.

ChatGPT is the engine most likely to cite a narrow page that answers the question directly, wherever that page sits in Google. Google's own AI features, by contrast, draw heavily on the pages that already rank in Google Search, so their citations follow Google traffic more closely. For a small site, ChatGPT is the most open door.
## One in 13 cited websites barely registers on Google
7.5% of the 10,000 websites AI engines cite most get fewer than 100 Google visits a month, about one in thirteen. 14.1% get fewer than 1,000, and 2.5% show no Google traffic at all. Together, the sites under 100 visits receive 2.4% of AI citations.
The typical cited website is mid-sized. The median gets 70,430 Google visits a month from US searchers, a solid audience but far from a household name. AI engines do not require a big Google presence before they will cite a site; they cite pages that answer the question, and many of those sit on sites Google sends few visitors to.
## Big sites still take most of the citations
Being cited and being cited often are different things. Websites with more than 1 million monthly Google visits make up 19.2% of cited sites but collect 75.1% of AI citations, an average of 123 each, against 5 to 7 for sites between 1 and 99,999 visits. youtube.com received 23,089 AI citations, google.com 14,962 and reddit.com 7,705.

A big Google audience is a sign of everything AI engines also reward: authority, a deep library of content and a brand people trust. So while a small site can be cited, the sites that already win on Google win most of the AI citations too.
## Specialist pages get cited
Many of the most-cited websites in the lowest traffic band are subdomains of large institutions, such as university departments and public health libraries, whose Google traffic is counted on the parent domain. Several of them still earn hundreds of AI citations each.
What these sources share is depth on one subject: a single disease, food safety, the law, animal health. Each answers a specific kind of question better than a general site can, and AI engines cite them for exactly those questions. A small business page that goes that deep on its own subject competes on the same terms.
## What this means for small businesses and publishers
Low Google traffic does not stop you from being cited. If a page answers a specific question clearly and completely, an AI engine can find it through its own search even when you rank nowhere for broad terms. Build pages around the precise questions your customers ask, with the detail a general site leaves out.
Check ChatGPT first. It cites low-traffic sites far more often than Google's AI features, so it is where a smaller site is most likely to appear. Ask it the questions in your niche and note which sources it uses.
