## Summary

Someone needs a mover for next month. They land on a local moving company's website, look for a quick way to ask for a quote, and find a phone number and a menu but no form. Or they find a form that wants their name, email, phone, both addresses, the move date, the number of bedrooms, a list of large items and how they heard about the company. A software buyer booking a demo meets the same choice: one vendor asks for name, work email and company, another adds job title, company size, industry, phone, country, current tool and budget. Either way, some of them leave.

For a business that lives on inbound leads, the contact form is often the last step between a visitor and a new customer. A missing form forces the visitor to call during business hours or go elsewhere; a long form asks for effort before the business has earned it. Every field a visitor has to fill in is one more reason to stop.

**68.1%** of small business websites show no contact form on their main pages. Among the forms that do exist, the typical one asks for 5 fields and half stop at 5 or fewer, but 15.6% ask for 10 or more, and forms get longer on the inner pages where visitors are most ready to get in touch. SaaS companies lean long too: 42.7% of their demo and contact forms ask for 7 or more fields.

## What we measured

On September 23 and 24, 2026 we checked the websites of 21,756 US small businesses listed on Google across 56 industries, from pest control and law firms to churches and yoga studios. On each site we looked at the homepage and two pages linked from it, together called its main pages here, and counted the visible fields in every form. We found 16,069 contact forms on 6,940 of the websites. In the same period we checked 579 US SaaS company websites the same way, recording the largest contact or demo form on each and whether the site had a tap-to-call link, online booking or live chat, and compared them with financial advisors and home services companies.

A contact form here is any form with at least three visible fields, such as name, email and message; it includes quote, booking, demo and intake forms. Search boxes and one- or two-field newsletter sign-ups are not contact forms. A field is any box, dropdown, checkbox or text area the visitor can see. The median, or typical, form is the middle one: half have fewer fields and half have more.

## Two thirds of small business websites show no contact form

68.1%

of US small business websites have no contact form on their main pages.

Only 31.9% of small business websites had a contact form on the homepage or the two pages linked from it. For the other two in three, a visitor who wants to ask a question or request a quote has to find a contact page on their own, call, or email. A form on the homepage lets a visitor act at the moment they decide to, without leaving the page.

This matters most for businesses whose customers compare several options at once: movers, contractors, lawyers, clinics, software vendors. A visitor with three tabs open will send a quick request to whichever business makes it easiest, and the one without a visible form loses that request before a conversation starts.

## Half of small business contact forms stop at 5 fields

5 fields

is what the typical small business contact form asks for.

Most small businesses that have a form keep it reasonable: 51.7% of contact forms ask for 5 fields or fewer, enough for a name, email, phone number and a message. The largest single group, 35.1% of forms, has just 3 or 4 fields.

The long tail is what lifts the average to 7.6 fields. One form in five has 7 to 9 fields, 15.6% have 10 or more, and the longest tenth start at 12 fields. These are usually booking and intake forms that ask for a full history before the first call. When someone quotes the "average contact form," the typical form of 5 fields is the better guide; the 7.6 average reflects the long forms.

## Forms get longer where visitors are readiest to act

Contact forms on homepages have a median of 5 fields and an average of 6.4. Forms on inner pages, which is where contact, quote and booking pages sit, have a median of 6 and an average of 8.4, two more fields on average.

| Where the form sits | Contact forms | Median fields | Average fields |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Homepage | 6,450 | 5 | 6.4 |
| Inner pages | 9,619 | 6 | 8.4 |

That runs against the visitor's intent. Someone who clicks through to a contact or quote page has already decided to reach out, and that is exactly where the form asks for more. Each extra field is a small cost at the point where a business can least afford to lose the lead.

## Pest control and moving companies ask for the most

By industry, the typical contact form ranges from 4 fields to 7. Trades that quote before a visit sit at the top: pest control and moving companies both have a median of 7 fields, and movers average 9.6. Medical practices have a median of 6 but the highest average, 13 fields, pulled up by a small number of very long intake forms.

The shortest forms belong to organisations that mostly want a name and an email: yoga studios, churches and nonprofits, each with a median of 4 fields. The businesses with the most at stake per lead, movers, med spas and medical practices, ask for the most, often collecting details that could wait for the first call.

## Four in ten SaaS demo forms ask for 7 fields or more

42.7%

of SaaS contact and demo forms ask for 7 or more fields.

The median SaaS contact or demo form asks for 6 fields and the average is 7.2. Its share of forms with 7 or more fields, 42.7%, is closer to home services companies at 47.2% than to financial advisors at 22.8%. Long SaaS forms usually come from lead qualification: company size, role, industry, budget and timeline help sales teams route and prioritise leads, yet much of it can be filled in automatically from a work email address.

SaaS forms split into two camps. The most common length is a short 3 or 4 fields, at 29.4%, while 7.7% ask for 15 or more and one in ten asks for 12 or more. Some SaaS companies ask for the minimum and qualify on the first call; others put every qualification question on the form. Short forms ask less of the buyer, long forms hand sales a fuller record, and the gap between the two camps is wide.

## Webflow SaaS websites keep forms shortest

Contact forms on SaaS websites built on Webflow have a median of 4 fields, against 6 on WordPress and 7 on other or unidentified platforms. The typical WordPress SaaS form is two fields longer than the typical Webflow one.

| --- | --- | --- |
| Webflow | 35.1% | 4 |
| WordPress | 32.4% | 6 |
| Other or unidentified platforms | 18.6% | 7 |

Across all platforms, 24.7% of SaaS websites have a contact or demo form on their homepage or main pages, and 58.2% offer no contact form, no online booking and no live chat there. 33% have a tap-to-call link and 14.3% run live chat. For a buyer who wants to talk to someone, every extra click between arriving and asking for a demo is another point where they can leave.

## What this means for small business owners

First, make sure a visitor can reach you from the homepage. Put a short form on the homepage itself, or a clear "Get a quote," "Book a demo" or "Contact us" button in the header that leads straight to one. Two in three small business websites miss this, so doing it well sets you apart.

Then count your fields and compare them with the typical 5. List each field and ask whether you need it before the first call: address, budget, the full job description and "how did you hear about us" can usually wait. Check your contact and quote pages as well as the homepage, since that is where forms grow. If you sell software, cut the demo form to name, work email and company, and move any further qualification to a second step after those three fields are sent, so you capture the lead even if the buyer stops.

Test the short form against your current one and compare not just completed forms but calls booked and jobs won. Our conversion optimization services (https://www.suffdigital.com/services/cro) start with exactly this: the path from landing on your site to sending a request.
