## Summary

Two people shop for a propane grill on the same afternoon. One types "What is the best propane grill?" into ChatGPT. The other writes that they want the best propane grill and care most about reliability and value. They get different products at the top of the answer, and a different list of websites underneath it.

You might expect a detailed question to need fewer sources, since ChatGPT can answer part of it from its own knowledge. It works the other way. The sources are the websites ChatGPT links to as evidence, and they are how an AI answer sends a buyer to a brand, a retailer or a review site. More sources per answer means more places a business can appear, and different sources mean a different set of sites to win.

A detailed question draws **35.8% more** cited websites than the short one: 4.21 per answer against 3.10. It also changes the top product 76.8% of the time, and on average 81.7% of the cited websites change with it. People who describe their needs are, in effect, running a different search from people who type three words.

## What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, with web search switched on and from a US location, 500 "best product" questions covering everything from laptops to grills. Each was asked in its short form ("What is the best X?") and in six reworded versions: a detailed version ("I'm looking for the best X. I care most about reliability, value..."), one adding "2026", one adding "on a budget", one ending in "please", one using "top" instead of "best", and one with a typo. Every version was asked twice, giving 6,992 answers.

For each short and reworded pair we compared two things. The top pick is the first product ChatGPT recommends. The sources are the distinct websites cited in the answer, so a site linked three times counts once. Because ChatGPT does not give identical answers to identical questions, we also compared the short question with itself across the two rounds. That baseline shows how much an answer changes by chance, so any wording effect is the gap above it.

## Detail means more sources, not fewer

4.21

websites are cited, on average, in ChatGPT answers to detailed product questions, against 3.10 for short ones.

No other rewording moved the source count this far. Adding the year raised it to 3.48, and the budget, typo, "top" and "please" versions all stayed within 0.1 of the 3.10 baseline. Detail is the one change that makes ChatGPT look wider before it answers.

The recommendation moves too. Asking the same short question twice changes the top pick 54.6% of the time, so ChatGPT's first choice is never fixed. The detailed version pushes that to 76.8%, 22 points higher; only a budget constraint changes the pick more often, at 87.4%. And 98.8% of detailed answers cite a different set of websites from the short answer, against 82.2% for a simple repeat.

The answers themselves get fuller. Detailed questions produce about 500 words, more than double the 216 of a short answer, and 87.8% name a price, against 65.3% of short answers. A buyer who asks about value gets numbers, and ChatGPT goes to more websites to find them.

## The sources shift toward testing and owner reviews

Short questions lean on product review sites: RTINGS appears in 10.4% of answers, Tom's Guide in 9.7% and NerdWallet in 8.3%. When the question mentions reliability, Consumer Reports jumps from 7.8% of answers to 20.1%, more than two and a half times as often. Reddit (10.7%) and J.D. Power (6%) enter the list of most-cited websites, and neither makes the top ten for short questions.

These are the websites that publish long-term testing and owner experience, which is exactly what "reliability" asks for. The top pick follows the sources. For "best gaming laptop for budget", the short answer led with the Acer Nitro V 16 and the detailed answer with the Lenovo LOQ 15. For propane grills, the Weber Genesis E325 gave way to the Weber Spirit E325. On average, 81.7% of the websites cited differ between the two versions of a question.

## What this means for brands and content teams

Write for the long question, not only the head term. Buyers who describe their needs trigger answers with more cited websites, so there are more places to appear. Pages that answer specific priorities directly, with reliability data, owner satisfaction, running costs and clear prices, match what these questions ask for and give ChatGPT something concrete to quote.

Then earn coverage where detailed answers look. Consumer Reports, Reddit and J.D. Power gain ground when buyers mention reliability, so your standing on those sites matters most for your most serious buyers. Test your own category by asking ChatGPT the short and the detailed version of your buyers' questions and noting which websites each cites. Working with an ai seo company (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/ai-seo-services) that tracks those citations shows which sources a brand needs to be on.
