Copy stat ## Summary A university, a city council and a large nonprofit each run websites with thousands of pages, several editors and strict rules about who can publish what. Many of them chose Drupal, the open-source content management system built for exactly that kind of site. Most were built years ago, and many of them were built on Drupal 7. That history matters now. Drupal 7 stopped receiving support in January 2025, which means no more security fixes from the Drupal project. Moving from Drupal 7 to a current version is close to a rebuild, and any organization facing a rebuild also faces the question of which platform to rebuild on. HTTP Archive found Drupal on **23.8%** fewer homepages in September 2026 than two years earlier, 141,306 against 185,552, and 13.4% fewer than a year earlier. Its share of website homepages fell from 1.13% to 0.91%, and 24,332 Drupal websites still run Drupal 7. ## What we measured HTTP Archive is a public project that loads the homepages of millions of websites in a real browser every month and records the software each one runs, including, where the site shows it, the software version. We counted the homepages where Drupal was identified in each monthly snapshot from October 2024 to September 2026, between 14.7 million and 16.4 million homepages a month, and divided by the total for that month. The one-year change compares September 2025 with September 2026. A platform's share is the percentage of all homepages in that month's snapshot that run it. The share is the fairer measure over time, because the number of homepages HTTP Archive loads changes from month to month; between September 2025 and September 2026 the total fell 2.6%. We also looked at the 1 million most visited websites, as ranked by Google's Chrome UX Report, and counted those whose platform in March 2026 differed from their platform in September 2025. ## Drupal websites fell by nearly a quarter in two years 23.8% fewer website homepages ran on Drupal in September 2026 than in October 2024. Drupal's highest count came in the first month measured, October 2024, with 185,552 homepages. It declined in 18 of the 23 month-to-month steps that followed and ended at 141,306, a loss of 44,246 websites over two years. In the last year alone it went from 163,193 to 141,306, 21,887 fewer. It fell in every quarter measured, from 1.13% to 0.91%, and dropped from 1.03% to 0.91% in the last year, a relative drop of 11.1%. The decline has been gradual and steady rather than sudden. ## One in five Drupal websites still runs Drupal 7 In September 2026, 24,332 homepages still ran Drupal 7, 21% of Drupal websites that show their version. Drupal 7 support ended in January 2025, so those websites no longer receive security fixes from the Drupal project. That group explains part of the wider trend. Upgrading from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10 or 11 means rebuilding the site's theme, modules and content structure, so the cost is close to building a new site. Some organizations facing that bill choose to rebuild on a different platform instead. ## More of the busiest websites leave Drupal than arrive Among the 1 million most visited websites, 50 moved to Drupal between September 2025 and March 2026 and 134 left it, a net change of -84. Drupal still wins new websites, but among the busiest sites more are moving off it than onto it. For the organizations that move, the risk is search traffic. A separate Suff Digital study, organic traffic after a platform switch (https://www.suffdigital.com/resources/data-studies/organic-traffic-after-platform-switch), found that most websites that change platform lose organic traffic within months of the move. Drupal sites often have deep archives and custom page addresses, and each one that is not redirected loses the rankings it built. ## What this means for organizations running Drupal If you run Drupal 10 or 11, the platform remains well supported and the fall in website counts does not change your security picture. If you run Drupal 7, 8 or 9, you are on a version that no longer receives support and should plan either an upgrade or a move within the year. Whichever you choose, start with an inventory of every page address, alias and file with traffic or links, and map each one to its new home before launch. Redirect mapping is the biggest part of protecting search traffic on a large Drupal site.
