## Summary

A founder choosing an ecommerce platform hears two claims: that one platform is "better for SEO" and that hosted stores cannot compete with custom builds in Google. The quickest test is to look at the stores that already rank. Search for thousands of products, collect the stores on page one, and check what they run on.

The answer matters for any store that depends on search traffic. Moving platforms is expensive, and choosing one that rarely appears on page one would mean fighting the software as well as the competition. Seeing which platforms actually hold page-one spots, and how high they rank, separates the platform question from the work that really moves rankings.

Shopify leads by a wide margin. **44.8%** of the online stores on Google's first page for product searches run on Shopify, against 10% on WordPress, including WooCommerce, and 4.2% on Salesforce Commerce Cloud. A further 37.1% run on custom or other platforms. Shopify stores also rank high when they rank: half of their page-one listings are in the top three.

## What we measured

In September 2026 we analyzed Google's US desktop results for 3,995 product searches on which Google showed a Popular Products block. From the top 10 organic results we kept the websites of online stores, leaving out publishers, social and reference sites and the largest marketplaces and retailers, such as Amazon and Walmart. That left 2,427 stores. We then identified the ecommerce platform behind each one.

A platform is the software a store runs on: hosted services such as Shopify, BigCommerce, Wix and Squarespace; Salesforce Commerce Cloud, used by large brands; and self-hosted software such as WordPress with WooCommerce and Magento. "Custom or other" covers stores that do not run on a standard platform, mostly large custom-built sites. For the position analysis we used all 3,506 ranking websites, including some that are not stores, and counted how often each platform's page-one listings sat in the top three.

of online stores on Google's first page for product searches run on Shopify.

No other standard platform comes close: WordPress, including WooCommerce, runs 10%, Salesforce Commerce Cloud 4.2% and BigCommerce 2.1%. Squarespace, Wix, Magento and PrestaShop each run under 1% of the stores that rank.

For a store owner, the practical point is that Shopify clearly does not hold a store back in Google: nearly half of the stores that win page-one spots for product searches use it.

## WordPress runs one ranking store in ten

WordPress sites, including stores running WooCommerce, make up 10% of the online stores on page one, the second-largest share of any standard platform.

WordPress stores rank a little lower than Shopify stores once they reach page one. 32% of WordPress sites' page-one listings sit in the top three, against 50% for Shopify, and their average position is 4.9 against 4.0. WordPress stores clearly can rank; they just reach the very top less often.

## Enterprise platforms and custom builds make up most of the rest

37.1% of the online stores on page one run on custom or other platforms, mostly large custom-built sites owned by major brands and retailers. Salesforce Commerce Cloud, the platform many large brands use, runs 4.2% of them, and BigCommerce 2.1%.

Hosted site builders are rare among the stores that rank for product searches: Squarespace runs 0.9% of them and Wix 0.5%. Together with Magento they account for 1.7% of the stores on page one, so nearly every ranking store runs on Shopify, WordPress, an enterprise platform or a custom build.

## Shopify and enterprise stores rank near the top

Across all 3,506 ranking websites, half of Shopify's page-one listings (50%) sit in the top three, with an average position of 4.0. Salesforce Commerce Cloud (51%) and BigCommerce (57%) are similar. WordPress and WooCommerce sites place 32% of their page-one listings in the top three, and Wix sites 19%.

| WordPress (no WooCommerce) | 32% | 4.9 |

Platform is not the only difference between these groups: enterprise platforms carry large, long-established brands. What the table does show is that the leading hosted commerce platforms keep up with enterprise software at the top of the page.

## What this means for store owners choosing a platform

If you are on Shopify, the platform is not your ranking problem. Nearly half of the stores on page one run on it and half of their listings reach the top three, so your results depend on your category pages, product content and links, not the software.

If you run WordPress with WooCommerce, you can rank, but close the gaps a hosted platform handles for you: page speed, clean category structure and product schema. If you run a store on a hosted site builder, invest in links and content, and consider whether the platform can grow with a larger catalog before you add hundreds of products.

Before any migration, measure what you would gain. Our shopify seo services (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/shopify-seo-services) cover both Shopify stores competing for page one and stores planning a move to Shopify without losing the rankings they already have.
