## Summary

A marketing agency writes the title for a client's new page as "Best Family Dentist Near Me in Denver Colorado" because the keyword tool said that was the phrase people search. It reads badly, and it does not rank. The page in first place is titled "Family Dentistry in Denver | New Patients Welcome".

A page's title is the clickable blue headline Google shows in its results, usually taken from the page's title tag. The exact-match title, with the keyword written word for word, is one of the oldest rules in SEO. Titles matter because they are the first thing a searcher reads, so forcing an awkward phrase into one can cost clicks even if it helps the page rank.

Most winners do not follow the rule. **78.2%** of the web pages ranking first on Google do not show the exact search phrase in their title, and even allowing any word order, fewer than a third contain every word of the search. There is a small edge at the top: the first result uses the exact phrase a little more often than its neighbors. It is far from a requirement.

## What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we analyzed Google's US desktop results for 20,000 keywords and recorded every top 10 organic result, the ordinary listings below the ads, with the title Google displayed for each: 166,403 results, including 20,000 first-place results.

A title counts as an exact match if the keyword's words appear in it in the same order, as one phrase, ignoring capital letters and punctuation. It counts as an all-words match if every word of the keyword appears anywhere in the title. We compared both rates by ranking position, and split the first-place rate by the number of words in the keyword and by search intent, what the person searching wants.

## Four in five top results skip the exact keyword

78.2%

of pages ranking first on Google do not show the exact search phrase in their title.

Only 21.8% of first-place results show the exact keyword phrase in their title, and 31.8% contain all its words in any order. Across all top 10 results, 19.5% of titles show the exact phrase. Four in five pages that win the top spot use a title that describes the topic in their own words.

That fits how people search. The same need is typed in many ways, and Google matches meaning rather than exact wording, so one well-written title can rank for dozens of phrasings. A page written for one exact phrase is written for one of those dozens.

## The first result has a small edge

The gap between first place and the rest is small but consistent. Positions 2 to 6 sit in a tight band from 20.1% to 20.6%, below the 21.8% at first place, and the rate drops further down the page, to 14.9% at position 9.

The all-words rate has the same shape: 31.8% at first place, around 29% for positions 2 to 6, and 24.3% at position 9. Unlike a keyword in the web address, which shows no edge at all, the words of the search in the title still seem to carry a small signal. But at a gap of one or two points, the title is rarely what separates first place from second.

## Long keywords almost never appear word for word

Keyword length decides most of the outcome. For two-word keywords, 43.8% of first-place titles contain the exact phrase. That falls to 22% for three words, 13.2% for four and 7.3% for five or more. Long searches are phrased in many different ways, and the top page rarely matches the exact wording.

Informational searches, where people want to learn something, have the most exact titles at first place (32.1%), because guides and how-to articles often use the question as their title. Transactional searches, from people ready to buy or hire, have the fewest (17.9%), where titles lead with a brand, a product name or a price instead.

## What this means for businesses

Write titles for the searcher. Include the main topic words, but do not force an awkward exact phrase, especially for long, specific keywords. Four in five first-place results do not use the exact phrase, so a natural title that covers the words in a readable order is in good company.

For short, core keywords such as "roof repair" or "tax accountant", using the phrase as written still makes sense: more than four in ten first-place results for two-word keywords do. Before writing, look at the current top five titles for your keyword to see how Google's winners phrase it.

Titles that read naturally and still target the right search are part of every page we handle in our on page seo services (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/on-page-seo-services).
