## Summary

Every time someone clicks a Google ad and then buys, books or fills in a form, the advertiser wants to know. The Google Ads conversion tag is the small piece of code that tells Google Ads that sale happened, so the advertiser can see which ads and keywords produce customers and let Google's bidding aim for more of them.

Whether a site carries that tag says a lot about how it markets itself. A site that runs Google Ads without it is spending blind. A site with it is measuring every click against revenue. Looking at which websites carry the tag shows where paid search is part of the business and where it is not.

**9.3%** of the 500,000 most visited websites carry a Google Ads conversion tag on their homepage. The biggest sites carry it least: 1.5% of the top 1,000, against 10.2% of sites ranked 100,000 to 500,000.

## What we measured

HTTP Archive is a public record of how websites are built, updated every month from the homepages of millions of sites. In September 2026 we took the homepages it holds for 384,600 of the 500,000 most visited websites and checked each one for a Google Ads conversion tag. We grouped the sites by popularity rank and compared the results with the Meta Pixel and Google Tag Manager on the same homepages.

A site carries the Google Ads tag when its homepage code includes a Google Ads conversion ID or the Google Ads conversion script. The Meta Pixel is Meta's equivalent for Facebook and Instagram ads. Google Tag Manager is a free Google tool that loads other tags, including the Google Ads tag, from a single container. Rank groups run from the 1,000 most visited sites down to sites ranked 100,000 to 500,000.

## One in eleven top websites carries a Google Ads tag

9.3%

of the 500,000 most visited websites carry a Google Ads conversion tag on their homepage.

That is 35,709 of 384,600 homepages. The Meta Pixel sits at a similar level, on 8.6% of the same homepages, so among the most visited sites, Google Ads tracking is slightly more common than Facebook and Instagram ad tracking.

The two tags follow the same pattern across the rankings, rising from under 2% of the top 1,000 to about one in ten sites lower down. Sites that measure one ad platform tend to measure the other: both are the tools of businesses that buy traffic and need to know what it returns.

## Smaller sites use the Google Ads tag most

The rate climbs steadily down the rankings: 1.5% of the top 1,000 sites, 3.5% of sites ranked 1,000 to 10,000, 5.9% of sites ranked 10,000 to 100,000 and 10.2% of sites ranked 100,000 to 500,000. Sites in the lowest group are about 7 times as likely as the top 1,000 to carry the tag.

The biggest websites are mostly platforms, publishers and household names that people visit directly or find through their own search rankings. The sites further down the list include far more online stores, local businesses and service companies, the advertisers that rely on paid search to find customers and track every sale back to a click.

## A quarter of top sites run Google Tag Manager without an Ads tag

104,400 of the top homepages, 27%, load Google Tag Manager but carry no Google Ads tag on the page itself. The share is highest among the biggest sites, at 32% of the top 1,000 and 33% of sites ranked 1,000 to 10,000, and 26% for sites ranked 100,000 to 500,000.

Tag Manager lets a site add, change and remove marketing tags from one place, without editing the website each time. Large sites favor it because many teams share the same pages. For those sites, what runs inside the container, including any Google Ads tag, is managed there rather than written into the homepage.

## What this means for marketers checking their tracking

If you run Google Ads, confirm that conversion tracking actually fires, whether it is written into your pages or loaded through Tag Manager. Google's Tag Assistant shows whether the tag loads and which conversions it records. An account without working conversion tracking has no way to separate a profitable keyword from a wasteful one, and Google's automated bidding has nothing to aim for.

For competitive research, a Google Ads conversion ID on a competitor's homepage is a strong sign they buy Google Ads and measure the results. Check the Tag Manager container too, since many sites load their tags there. A google ads agency (https://www.suffdigital.com/services/ppc/google-ads) such as Suff Digital checks the tracking setup first, because every other decision in an account depends on it.
