Copy stat ## Summary A dentist's homepage opens with a large photo and the words "Family Dentistry in Austin" written across it. A visitor reads the headline instantly. A search engine reading the code finds no main heading at all, because the words are part of the image, and has to guess what the page is about from whatever text it can find further down. The H1 is the main heading of a web page, marked in the code with an h1 tag. It tells visitors and search engines the page's topic in one line, and it is one of the first places Google looks to understand what a page offers. Screen readers used by blind visitors also rely on it to announce the page. One clear H1 per page is the structure every SEO checklist expects. Half the web does not have it. **49.6%** of homepages have either no H1 or more than one. Missing headings are the larger problem: 31.2% of homepages have none, against 18.5% with several. And the most visited websites are not better at it: 35.1% of the 10,000 most visited homepages have no H1. ## What we measured We used the public HTTP Archive, which loads millions of homepages every month and records what each one contains. We took all 15,458,489 homepages recorded in September 2026, as they load in a mobile browser with all their scripts run, and counted the H1 headings on each one: none, exactly one, or more than one. We then grouped homepages by popularity using Google's Chrome UX Report, which ranks websites by how often Chrome users visit them: the 10,000 most visited websites (7,469 homepages), websites ranked from 10,000 to 1 million, and websites outside the top million, which make up most of the web. ## Almost a third of homepages have no main heading 31.2% of homepages have no H1 heading at all. That is 4,818,516 homepages with no main heading in their code. On those pages, the headline a visitor sees is usually text written into a hero image, a slider caption or a styled paragraph. All of them look like a heading to a person, but none tells a search engine or a screen reader which line is the page's main message. Multiple H1s blur the page's main topic: when the logo, a tagline and a section title are all marked as main headings, nothing in the code says which one matters. A common source is a website theme that wraps the logo in an H1 and then adds another H1 for the page title. Only 50.4% of homepages have exactly one H1. ## The most visited websites skip the main heading more often Size and budget do not guarantee a clean heading. 35.1% of the 10,000 most visited websites have no H1 on their homepage, and websites ranked from 10,000 to 1 million skip it most often, at 38.5%. Websites outside the top million are the least likely to leave it out, at 30.8%. Websites outside the top million have several on 18.7% of homepages, against 12.2% for the 10,000 most visited. A likely reason is that large websites build custom homepages where the headline is a design element, often an image or a styled block, while smaller websites use ready-made themes that add H1 tags in more than one place. Both groups end up with the same problem from opposite directions. ## What this means for website owners Open your homepage, right-click the main headline and choose Inspect. If the headline is not inside an h1 tag, change it in your page builder or theme settings, and if it is part of an image, add it as real text. The H1 should state what you do in plain words, such as "Family Dentist in Austin", not only your brand name. If you find several H1s, check whether your logo, tagline or a section title is marked as one. Keep a single H1 for the main message and use H2 and H3 headings for the sections below it. Then check your main service pages the same way, because a theme that gets the homepage wrong usually repeats the mistake everywhere.
