## Summary

A mid-size retailer has run its online store on Magento for a decade. The latest upgrade quote has arrived, along with a hosting renewal and a list of extensions that need replacing. The owner starts asking what other stores have done, and the answer across the web is clear: a steady stream of Magento stores has been leaving, and most of those that switch go to Shopify.

Magento, now sold by Adobe as Adobe Commerce with a free open-source edition, is one of the oldest ecommerce platforms and has long been the choice for larger catalogs and custom stores. It is also one of the most demanding to run: the store owner or a developer handles hosting, security patches and upgrades. How many stores stay on it matters to every merchant weighing the cost of that upkeep against a move.

Two years of data show a platform losing stores almost every month. Magento lost **23.8%** of its stores, 14,038 in all, while Shopify grew 22.7%. For merchants planning a move, the priority is protecting search traffic during it.

## What we measured

The HTTP Archive is a public project that loads millions of homepages each month and records the technologies they use. We counted homepages running Magento and Shopify in each monthly crawl from October 2024 to September 2026, 24 crawls of 14.7 million to 16.4 million homepages each.

Because the number of homepages crawled changes from month to month, we also divided each platform's count by the month's total to get its share of all homepages, which adjusts for crawl size. A relative drop compares the two shares: falling from 0.36% to 0.29% is a 19.1% relative drop. A store here means a homepage running the platform.

## Magento lost nearly a quarter of its stores in two years

23.8%

of Magento stores disappeared between October 2024 and September 2026.

Magento fell from 58,906 homepages to 44,868, a loss of 14,038 stores. Measured as a share of all homepages, which removes the effect of the total number of homepages changing, it fell from 0.36% to 0.29%, a relative drop of 19.1%. Both measures tell the same story.

Magento is far from gone: 44,868 homepages still run it. At the pace of the last two years, though, the base shrinks every quarter.

## The decline came one store at a time

Magento lost ground in 20 of 23 month-to-month steps. The three upticks were small, the largest being 904 homepages in the final month. There was no single month when stores left in a wave; the platform lost about 600 stores a month, steadily, for two years.

That pattern fits how stores leave a platform. A move gets decided when a hosting contract ends, a major upgrade is due or a redesign is already planned, and those dates are spread across the calendar. For a merchant still on Magento, it means the question comes up at each of those moments rather than all at once.

## Shopify grew 22.7% while Magento shrank

Over the same two years Shopify added 134,869 homepages, growing 22.7% from 594,684 to 729,553, and lifted its share of all homepages from 3.62% to 4.72%. The two trends are linked. In a separate Suff Digital study of platform switches among the 1 million most visited websites, Magento lost 218 websites to switches in six months, and 135 of them went to Shopify.

Shopify's appeal to a Magento merchant is the work it removes: hosting, security patches and version upgrades are handled by the platform. The trade-off is less control over how the store is built.

## Magento fell 11.9% in the past year

From September 2025 to September 2026 Magento fell 11.9%, from 50,950 homepages to 44,868. That is a steeper one-year drop than BigCommerce's 8.4% and in line with WooCommerce's 11%, two other commerce platforms tracked over the same months.

The one-year figure shows the decline continuing at a similar pace to the two-year trend, and Magento sits at the steep end of the commerce platforms tracked.

## What this means for Magento merchants

If you are on Magento 2 and staying, keep up with Adobe's security releases and supported PHP versions, and budget for the upgrades that keep the store patched. If you are still on Magento 1, which lost support in 2020, a move should be on this year's plan.

If you are moving, treat search traffic as part of the project from day one. Magento addresses rarely map one to one onto a new platform's format, so every product and category address needs a permanent redirect to its new home. Our magento migration services (https://www.suffdigital.com/services/website-migration/magento-migration) map every product, category and old address before launch, so the new store keeps the rankings the old one earned.
