Copy stat ## Summary Search for a local business and look at the two lines of grey text under its link. On a well-kept site, those lines were written by the owner to explain what the business offers. On nearly a third of websites, nobody wrote them, and Google fills the space with whatever text it pulls from the page. That text is a meta description: a single line of page code that summarizes the page for search engines, which Google can show as the snippet under your link. It takes a minute to write and costs nothing. Without one, you give Google nothing of your own to work with, and the snippet that sells your page to searchers is left to chance. **30.8%** of website homepages have no meta description, and the rate barely moves across millions of sites until you reach the very top of the web. The 1,000 most visited sites miss it on 15.1% of homepages, half as often. ## What we measured We used the September 2026 HTTP Archive, a public dataset that tests millions of websites every month, and took the meta description result from Google's Lighthouse test for 14,718,128 mobile homepages. A homepage counts as missing a meta description when it has none or an empty one. We then grouped sites by popularity using Google's Chrome UX Report, from the 1,000 most visited sites to sites outside the top million. As a second check, we read the homepage code of the 500,000 most visited websites, the file a search engine receives before any scripts run, and counted homepages with no meta description tag at all. Lighthouse is Google's free website testing tool, built into the Chrome browser. ## The most popular sites miss it half as often 30.8% of website homepages have no meta description. The rate is flat across almost all of the web and only falls at the very top. Sites outside the top million miss the meta description on 30.8% of homepages, and sites ranked between 10,000 and 1 million on 30.1%, almost identical. The 10,000 most visited sites fall to 17.5%, and the top 1,000 to 15.1%: 105 of the 694 top-1,000 homepages tested. A site in the top 100,000 is about as likely to skip the tag as a small local business site. The change only shows up among the few thousand most visited sites, the ones that run formal SEO programs with checklists, reviews and dedicated staff. The difference is process, not difficulty. ## Most missing descriptions were never written Among the homepages of the 500,000 most visited websites, 27.2% have no meta description tag in their code at all. That figure sits close to the 30.8% Lighthouse finds across all homepages. The closeness matters for what it says about the cause. Most missing descriptions are not being added late by scripts or lost in a technical error: they were simply never written. The fix is editorial, and anyone who can edit the website can make it. ## What this means for site owners and content teams Check your homepage and your ten most visited pages for a meta description. Write one for each that says what the page offers, who it is for and where, in about 150 characters. Google may still choose its own text for some searches, but it often keeps a description that matches what the searcher asked. If you use a content management system or website builder, look at its default template. If new pages start with a blank description field, every page added later will ship without one; set a sensible default and make the field part of your publishing checklist, as the biggest sites do.
