## Summary

A visitor opens a website and, for a split second, the headline flashes in a plain system font before snapping into the brand's typeface. That switch is the page waiting for a font file to arrive from another company's servers. On more than four in ten websites, that company is Google.

A font service delivers typefaces or icons to a website from its own servers, so the site does not have to host the files itself. Which service a site uses is a speed and privacy choice as much as a design one: every font file from another server is one more request the browser makes before it can show text as designed, and every request to a third party tells that party someone visited. Loading Google Fonts from Google's servers has drawn privacy complaints in Europe for exactly that reason.

Google Fonts dominates. It loads on **42.8%** of homepages, more than the 32% of homepages that run on WordPress. It is more than twice as common as Font Awesome, the next service, and about 14 times as common as Adobe Fonts, the leading paid option.

## What we measured

We used the public HTTP Archive crawl from September 2026, which records the technology behind 15,470,478 website homepages. We counted the homepages that load each web font service or icon font and divided by all homepages, so every share is a share of the web.

A web font service hosts typefaces that websites load on demand, such as Google Fonts, Adobe Fonts (formerly Typekit) and Bunny Fonts. An icon font delivers small symbols, such as a phone, an envelope or a social media logo, as characters in a font; Font Awesome, Bootstrap Icons and Ionicons are the best known. Twemoji is a set of emoji images that WordPress loads so emoji look the same on every device.

## Google Fonts is the web's default typeface library

42.8%

of website homepages load Google Fonts.

Google Fonts is free, offers a large library of typefaces, and is built into many themes, page builders and website platforms, so a site often loads it without the owner ever choosing to. That is how it reaches 6,626,547 homepages, more than every other font service in this study combined. It is on more homepages than WordPress, which runs 4,945,342, or 32% of the same websites.

| Bunny Fonts | 74,856 | 0.5% |

57.3% of homepages load at least one font service. For a typical business site, the question is not whether it uses web fonts but how many files it loads and from where. A site that loads four weights of two Google typefaces makes eight font requests to Google's servers before its text looks the way the designer intended.

## Icon fonts take second and third place

Icon fonts fill the next two spots. Font Awesome, a set of icons delivered as a font, loads on 19.5% of homepages, about one in five, for 3,017,000 sites. It is the source of the small phone, envelope and social media symbols on a huge number of business websites, often loaded in full for a handful of icons.

Twemoji, which WordPress uses to show emoji the same way on every device, is on 16.1% of homepages, 2,496,361 sites. Most site owners never chose it: it arrives with WordPress by default, whether or not the site ever shows an emoji. Smaller icon sets trail far behind, with Bootstrap Icons on 1.2% of homepages and Ionicons on 0.6%.

## Paid and privacy-focused font services are niche

Adobe Fonts, the main paid option and the typeface library that comes with Adobe's design software subscriptions, runs on 3% of homepages, 462,442 sites. That is about one fourteenth of Google Fonts' reach, which shows how far free has beaten paid in web typography.

Bunny Fonts, a drop-in replacement for Google Fonts marketed on privacy, loads on 74,856 homepages, 0.5%. It serves the same free typefaces without sending visitor data to Google. Its small share shows that, despite the privacy complaints, almost every site using these free typefaces still loads them from Google directly.

## What this means for business owners and designers

Check how many font families and weights your site loads. In Chrome, open the page, right-click, choose Inspect, then the Network tab, and filter by "Font". Two families with two or three weights each is plenty for most business sites; every extra weight is another file that can delay text on a phone.

Consider hosting your fonts on your own server or switching to a system font stack that uses the fonts already on the visitor's device. Both remove a third-party request and the privacy question that comes with it. If your site loads all of Font Awesome for a handful of icons, replace them with inline SVG icons, which are lighter, and switch off WordPress's emoji script if your site does not use emoji.

Font loading is one of the quicker speed wins on a WordPress site. A wordpress speed optimization service (https://www.suffdigital.com/services/website-maintenance/speed-optimization-service) can self-host your fonts, trim unused weights and icon sets, and remove default scripts like Twemoji that your pages do not need.
