## Summary

A shopper sees an Instagram ad from a brand she has never heard of: a real customer wearing the jacket, filmed on a phone. She taps through to the store and lands on a homepage of studio photos, prices and a newsletter box. No star ratings, no customer photos, no sign that anyone has bought here before. The proof that made her click stayed behind in the app.

Social proof is the evidence that other people buy from a store and are happy with it: product reviews and star ratings, photos and videos posted by customers, a feed of the brand's Instagram posts, and creators or customers who recommend the store through tracked affiliate links. For a small or unknown store, it is the fastest way to earn a stranger's trust, and the tools that collect and display it cost little and install in minutes.

Most online stores do not use them where new visitors land. Only **10.4%** of online stores run a product review app on their homepage, and customer photo tools, Instagram feeds and affiliate platforms each reach about 2% of stores or fewer. Shopify is the exception on almost every measure: 37.4% of Shopify stores run a review app. Meanwhile 30.7% of online stores run the Meta Pixel, so stores pay to reach shoppers on social media far more often than they show those shoppers what other customers think.

## What we measured

We used the public HTTP Archive crawl of September 2026, which loads the homepages of 15,470,478 websites and records the software each one uses. Of those, 3,911,812 are online stores, sites running a store platform or shopping-cart software, and 729,553 of the stores run on Shopify. For each store we checked whether four kinds of social proof tool load on the homepage, then compared online stores with Shopify stores, WordPress websites, business-to-business websites, all websites, popularity bands and country domains.

A product review app collects reviews from buyers, usually by emailing them after delivery, and displays star ratings and review text on the store. A customer photo or video review tool asks buyers to add photos or videos to their review and shows them as a gallery or carousel. An Instagram feed widget pulls a brand's recent Instagram posts onto its web page automatically. An affiliate, referral or influencer platform gives partners a tracked link or code and credits them with the sales they send. Business-to-business websites are sites running a business-to-business marketing or sales tool. Popularity comes from Google's Chrome UX Report, which ranks websites by real Chrome traffic. The popularity and country comparisons count all websites in each group, not only stores, so their rates run lower than the store figures.

## Nine in ten online stores show no review app

10.4%

of online stores run a product review app on their homepage.

That is 408,579 stores out of 3.9 million, about one in ten. For the other nine in ten, a first-time visitor sees products and prices but no review widget from past buyers until, at best, a product page. Product reviews are still by far the most common social proof tool on online stores. The others barely register.

Source: Suff Digital analysis of 3,911,812 online stores, including 729,553 Shopify stores · the public HTTP Archive crawl of 15.5 million websites, September 2026

1.95% of online stores embed an Instagram feed, 1.92% run an affiliate or influencer platform and 1.05% show customer photos or videos. Each of these tools reuses content a store already has or already pays for, from posts it publishes every week to the creators who talk about its products, yet at least 98 in 100 stores leave each one out.

## Shopify stores lead on almost every social proof tool

37.4%

of Shopify stores run a product review app on their homepage.

That is about 272,900 Shopify stores, roughly two thirds of every online store with a review app, and more than three times the all-store rate. Shopify leads on customer photos too: 5.25% of Shopify stores load a customer photo or video review tool, five times the 1.05% of online stores overall. And 5.6% of Shopify stores run an affiliate, referral or influencer platform, five times the 1.1% rate across all websites and nearly three times the 1.92% of online stores overall.

Ease of setup likely explains much of the gap. On Shopify, review, photo review, affiliate and influencer apps install from Shopify's app store in a few clicks, add star ratings and galleries to the store theme without code, and read orders straight from the store. On other platforms, showing reviews usually takes a plugin, a developer or both, so fewer stores do it.

The one exception is Instagram. WordPress websites embed an Instagram feed at 4.2%, more than three times the 1.29% of Shopify stores and nearly three times the 1.5% average across all websites. WordPress sites are often small businesses, blogs and portfolios run by the same people who post to Instagram, and a feed block is a quick way to fill a homepage with fresh images. WordPress websites almost never show customer photos, though: 0.08%, fewer than one in 1,000.

## Stores measure social ads far more than they show social proof

30.7% of online stores run the Meta Pixel, the tracking code that measures Facebook and Instagram ads. That makes the Meta Pixel 29 times as common as a customer photo or video tool on online stores, and about 16 times as common as an Instagram feed.

Stores treat social media as an ad channel to measure, not as content to reuse. Customer photos and videos are the staple of social ads because shoppers trust other buyers more than they trust a brand, and every store running Meta ads with customer content already has that content ready for its own pages. An Instagram feed or a photo review gallery costs nothing per view, which makes it one of the cheapest ways to carry the proof from the ad onto the page where people buy.

## Bigger stores show reviews, smaller stores show Instagram

Reviews, customer photos and partner programs grow with the business. Online stores among the million most visited websites run a product review app 21.2% of the time, three times the 6.7% of stores ranked outside the top 10 million. The same top-million stores load a customer photo or video tool 2.9% of the time and run an affiliate or influencer platform 7.2% of the time, both well above the store average. Bigger stores have more buyers posting reviews and photos, and the order volume that makes commission tracking pay off.

Instagram feeds run the other way. Stores outside the most visited million websites embed a feed at 1.9%, nearly twice the 1% of stores inside it. Large brands control their homepages tightly and keep social content in campaigns; small stores use the feed to show that they are active and real.

At the very top, third-party social proof disappears. None of the 754 websites among the 1,000 most visited shows a third-party review app, a customer photo tool or an Instagram feed on its homepage: the largest brands build their own review systems or keep reviews on product pages. Across all websites, review apps peak at 6% of sites ranked 100,000 to 1 million, and affiliate platforms at 3.33% of sites ranked 10,000 to 100,000, the bands where many established online brands sit.

## Australian and UK websites show the most social proof

By country domain, Australian websites lead on reviews at 10.6% and UK websites follow at 10.3%, almost twice the 5.9% of .us websites. Australian websites also embed Instagram feeds most often, at 3.33%, four times the 0.81% of .us websites, and lead on customer photo tools at 1.13%.

Partner programs are the exception. .us websites run affiliate or influencer platforms most often at 1.44%, followed by UK websites at 1.23%, while websites across EU country domains sit at 0.51%, about a third of the .us rate. For a store selling into Australia or the UK, a visible review widget is closer to standard practice among competitors; for a brand selling in Europe, a creator or affiliate program is a channel few rivals use.

## What this means for online stores

Start with reviews. If you sell on Shopify without a review app, more than a third of your competitors already have one; on any other platform, nine in ten stores show none on their homepage, so adding one sets you apart. Turn on the automatic email that asks each buyer for a review a few days after delivery, and offer a small incentive for a photo or video, so the library grows with every order.

Show that proof where decisions happen: star ratings under each product on collection pages, a review block with customer photos on every product page, and a few of your best reviews and a light Instagram feed on the homepage for first-time visitors. Check the result on a phone, where the review block often ends up far below the add-to-cart button, and keep the feed to a handful of posts so the page stays fast.

Then connect it to your ads and partners. The customer photos that perform in your Instagram campaigns belong on the landing pages those ads send people to, and the creators who sell best through tracked affiliate links are the ones whose content to feature. Measure what each change does by comparing conversion on products with many reviews against those with few. An ecommerce cro agency (https://www.suffdigital.com/services/cro/ecommerce-cro) can test review placement, photo galleries and star ratings against your current setup.
