## Summary

Someone searches for a dentist, a plumber or a mortgage rate. The first thing they read is the bold blue headline of the ad at the top of the page, and the first part of that headline carries the most weight. Advertisers get 30 characters for it, and most do not use them all.

For anyone running search ads, those characters are free space in the most valuable position on the page. A price, a city name, a guarantee or a star rating often fits in the characters left over, and each of those gives a searcher a concrete reason to click.

Only **10%** of top-position search ads use all 30 characters of their first headline. The average first headline is 24.2 characters long, and nearly one in five top ads uses fewer than 20 characters, often little more than a brand name.

## What we measured

In September 2026 we looked at US Bing desktop search results for keywords in industries from insurance and dental care to plumbing and solar. 421 of 4,454 results pages showed ads, 9.5%, and on each of them we took the ad in the top position. In all, the pages showed 1,388 unique ads from 711 advertiser websites. Microsoft Ads lets advertisers import their Google Ads campaigns directly, so many Bing ads carry the same copy advertisers run on Google.

A search ad's title is made of up to three headlines of up to 30 characters each, shown joined together. The first headline leads the title and is the part searchers see first. We isolated the first headline of each top-position ad and counted its characters, including spaces. We also measured the full displayed title and grouped the first-headline lengths by industry.

## Most top ads leave headline space unused

10%

of top-position search ads use all 30 characters of their first headline.

Headline length clusters in the mid to high 20s. 29% of top ads use 25 to 27 characters and 26% use 28 to 30. Only 43 ads use exactly 30. The median first headline is 25 characters, five short of the limit.

A long tail of short headlines pulls the average down. 19% of top ads use fewer than 20 characters, and 5.5% fewer than 15, often a bare brand name. A brand name alone tells a searcher who is advertising but not why they should click, and it gives up the space an advertiser pays for.

## Insurance and mortgage ads write the longest headlines

By industry, insurance ads have the longest first headlines at 26.6 characters on average, followed by mortgage at 26.5 and dental at 25.3. Home remodeling ads have the shortest at 21.9, with IT services at 22.4 and solar at 22.9.

The gap between the longest and shortest industries is 4.7 characters, about one word. In insurance and mortgage, the typical top ad already uses most of its first headline; in home remodeling, IT services and solar, the typical top ad leaves seven characters or more empty.

## Searchers read more than the first headline

Full displayed titles, which join two or three headlines, average 53.1 characters. That is the text a searcher actually reads, so the second and third headlines carry weight too. Still, the first headline leads the line and is the one that survives when a title is cut short, which makes it the place for the strongest message.

## What this means for PPC advertisers

Write first headlines close to 30 characters when you have something useful to add. A city name, a price, an offer or a proof point such as "4.9 Stars" fits in the five or six characters most ads leave unused. Replace a bare brand-name headline with one that names the service and the benefit, and move the brand to a later headline.

Pin your best headline to position one only if it is strong on its own, and test variants that change the first headline rather than only the third. Industries with short headlines, such as home remodeling, solar and IT services, have the most room to stand out simply by using the full length.

Our ppc management services (https://www.suffdigital.com/services/ppc) test headline length and wording as part of every campaign, so no character in the top spot goes to waste.
