## Summary
A homeowner needs a locksmith and finds two on Google Maps. One shows a street address, dozens of reviews and a website. The other shows only a town name, two reviews and no website. The second business may be perfectly good, but its listing gives the customer little reason to call.
Google lets businesses that serve customers at the customer's location, such as plumbers and cleaners, hide their street address and show a service area instead. That is a legitimate choice for a business run from home. The listing still has to earn trust some other way, through reviews, a website and an owner who keeps it up to date.
Most hidden-address listings do not. Home service companies that hide their address have a median of **2** Google reviews, against 10 for those that show one, and 55.4% have never been claimed by their owner. A missing address usually travels with a listing nobody is looking after.
## What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we looked at 6,142 US Google Business Profiles in 11 home service trades, from plumbers and electricians to movers and garage door companies, taken from 23,164 profiles in 54 local business categories. For each profile we recorded the address Google shows, the number of reviews, the star rating, whether it links a website and whether it has been claimed. We compared profiles that hide their address with those that show one, and compared the 11 trades with each other and with all other categories.
A Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows a business's address, reviews, hours and phone number in Google Search and Maps. A profile counts as hiding its address when Google shows no street line, only a city and ZIP code, or a street name with no house number. A profile is unclaimed when no owner has verified it with Google, so nobody at the business can edit it. The median is the middle profile: half have more reviews, half have fewer.
## Hidden-address profiles have fewer reviews and fewer owners
55.4%
of home service Google Business Profiles with a hidden address are unclaimed.
That compares with 21.1% of home service profiles that show a full address. A listing without an owner cannot reply to reviews, add photos or fix its details, and it shows. Hidden-address profiles have a median of 2 Google reviews against 10, an average rating of 4.33 stars against 4.53, and 35.6% link a website, about half the 66.8% of full-address profiles.

For a customer comparing listings, each of those gaps counts against the business. Fewer reviews give less proof that others hired it, a lower rating makes it look riskier, and no website leaves the customer with nothing to check. The 267 home service companies that hide their address are, on the whole, the least visible and least managed listings in their trades.
## Unclaimed listings are four times as likely to lack an address
Unclaimed home service profiles show no street address 10.6% of the time, against 2.5% of claimed ones, a fourfold gap. Across all home service profiles, 4.3% hide the street address, close to the 3.5% of profiles in other kinds of business. That 4.3% splits into 2.5% of home service profiles that show only a city and ZIP code and 1.9% that show a street name with no number.
An owner who claims a listing gets the chance to set it up properly: either show the real address or hide it deliberately and set a service area in its place. An unclaimed listing gets neither. Its address is whatever Google pieced together, which is how a profile ends up with a street name but no number.
## Plumbers and cleaners hide their address most often
Among the 11 trades, plumbers are most likely to show no street address, at 7.8% of profiles, followed by cleaning services at 7% and electricians at 6.3%. HVAC companies almost always show one: 0.7% hide it, so 99.3% of HVAC profiles display a full address. Garage door companies follow at 1.4%.

The trades at the top include many one-person businesses run from a van or a home, where hiding the address is the natural choice. HVAC and garage door companies more often run from a shop or showroom with a public address, which they have every reason to display.
## What this means for home service companies
Hiding your address is fine; leaving your listing unmanaged is not. If you work from home or only visit customers, Google's rules say you should hide your address and set a service area. Do not list a home address you want kept private, and do not use a virtual office or mailbox, which can get a listing suspended. If you have a shop or office customers can visit, show it.
Either way, claim your Google Business Profile first, because an unclaimed listing is where most missing addresses come from. Then make up for the missing address with everything else a customer checks: link your website, add photos of your vans and finished jobs, and ask every customer for a review so your count climbs past the handful most hidden-address listings show.
