**26.9%** of small business websites link from their own pages to an old address that redirects, about 30 times the 0.9% that have a chain of two redirects in a row, the redirect chains SEO tools warn about. The everyday housekeeping faults are the common ones: 18.3% of small business websites reuse page titles and 12.8% hide missing pages from Google.

## Key Findings

1. 1. **26.9%** of small business websites link from their own pages to an old address that redirects, while 0.9% have a chain of two redirects in a row and one website in 5,120 has a chain of three or more. Copy stat
2. 2. **18.3%** of small business websites give two or more pages the exact same title tag, the headline Google shows in search results, and 21.2% reuse the same meta description. Copy stat
3. 3. **12.8%** of small business websites do not return a real "page not found" (404) error for a page that does not exist, most often because they redirect it to the homepage. Copy stat
4. 4. **45%** of church websites link to their own redirects, 30.9% of fashion store websites reuse title tags and 27.1% of auto dealer websites hide missing pages, the worst industry on each check. Copy stat
5. 5. Small business websites built on WordPress reuse title tags **8.4%** of the time against 13.1% for Wix, but 39% of WordPress websites link to their own redirects against 12% of Wix websites. Copy stat
6. 6. **1.6%** of small business websites load on both the www and the bare version of their address with no redirect, and 1.1% load the same page with and without a trailing slash. Copy stat

## Summary

A bakery renames its menu page from /menu to /our-menu and adds a redirect so old links keep working. Its navigation still points at /menu. A year later a new site launches on a different platform, the redirect is dropped, and the menu link in the footer now leads nowhere. Nobody notices, because the website still sends visitors somewhere: straight to the homepage, which it does for every address it does not recognise.

None of this shows on the screen. It lives in the settings behind the pages: where links point, what each page is called in Google, what the server says when a page is missing, and which address counts as the official one. Each fault is small, and each one wastes a click, splits a page's ranking signals or keeps Google from seeing the site as the owner intends. Most take minutes to fix once someone looks.

The faults SEO tools warn about loudest are the rarest. One small business website in 5,120 has a redirect chain of three or more hops. The quiet faults are common: **26.9%** of small business websites link to their own redirected addresses, 18.3% give two or more pages the same title and 12.8% never admit that a page is missing.

## What we measured

On September 23 and 24, 2026 we visited 5,120 websites of US small businesses listed on Google Business Profiles, across 56 industries, and followed each website's own links across up to 20 pages. For every website we recorded the redirects its links pass through, the title tag and meta description of each page, the canonical tag of each page, whether pages load at more than one address, and the answer the server gives when asked for a made-up address that should not exist. For the page title check we kept the 4,295 websites with at least two pages, 62,440 pages in all.

A redirect sends a visitor from one address to another; a chain is two or more redirects in a row. A title tag is the clickable headline Google shows for a page, and a meta description is the summary it can show underneath. A 404 is the "not found" status a server should send for a missing page; a soft 404 is a missing page that answers with a redirect or a normal page instead. A canonical tag is a line of code that tells search engines which address is the official version of a page. We also grouped websites by the platform named in their code, such as WordPress or Wix.

## Everyday faults outnumber the dramatic ones

Put every check side by side and the pattern is clear. The three faults that come from day-to-day editing, stale internal links, copied titles and a catch-all answer to missing pages, each affect more than one small business website in ten. The faults that come from a broken server setup, duplicate addresses, stray canonical tags and redirect chains, each affect fewer than one in fifty.

The split follows who touches the website. Hosting platforms and website builders now handle most server settings by default. Links, titles and page names are edited by owners, staff and volunteers, one page at a time, and that is where mistakes pile up.

## The most common fault is linking to your own redirects

26.9%

of small business websites link to at least one of their own redirected addresses.

A page gets renamed, the site moves to https or drops the www, and a redirect is added so nothing breaks. The links inside the site are never updated, so the menu, footer and older posts keep pointing at the old address and lean on the redirect every time. Each of those clicks makes an extra request before the page loads, and the site's own navigation now depends on a redirect that the next redesign or host move could drop.

Real redirect chains are rare. Across all 5,120 websites there were 65 chains on 48 websites, and 54 of them were two hops long. The single three-hop chain belonged to an accounting firm whose site bounced between the bare domain and the www version before settling. 11 of the two-hop chains sent visitors from http to https and back again, the sign of a hard-coded link clashing with a server rule, and 10 redirect loops, addresses that forward back to themselves, sat on 3 websites.

## One in five small business websites reuses page titles

18.3%

of small business websites give two or more pages the exact same title tag.

The title tag is one of the main ways Google tells two pages apart. When a homepage, a "New Arrivals" page and a "Sale" page all carry the shop's name as their title, the pages compete for the same searches and give a searcher no reason to pick one. Websites with duplicate titles have 1.4 groups of pages sharing a title on average, and the fault does not go away with size: 15.8% of small business websites with 20 or more pages reuse a title.

Descriptions are copied even more often. 21.2% of small business websites reuse the same meta description on more than one page, usually because a template fills in one default summary for every page that has none of its own.

## One in eight small business websites hides missing pages

12.8%

of small business websites do not return a real 404 error for a page that does not exist.

87.2% of small business websites answer a missing page correctly. The rest hide it in two ways. 6.9% redirect any unknown address somewhere else, usually the homepage, and permanent redirects outnumber temporary ones by about two to one, so most of these websites tell Google that every lost page has moved to the homepage for good. Another 4.9% serve a normal page with an "OK" status, often a friendly "not found" message that tells the visitor the truth and tells Google the opposite.

87.2%

Redirect to another page

6.9%

200 OK (soft 404)

4.9%

Server or access error

0.9%

Google treats both as soft 404s. A mass redirect to the homepage gains nothing in search and drops the visitor on a page that has nothing to do with the link they clicked, and a normal page for a missing address can be indexed as thin, empty content. Either way the website's broken links never show up as errors, so the owner has no list of what to fix.

## Churches, fashion stores and auto dealers top the fault lists

Each fault has its own leaders, and the gap between the best and worst industry is wide on every check.

All small business websites by fault

26.9%

Reuses a title tag

18.3%

No real 404 for a missing page

12.8%

| Fault | All small business websites | Highest industry | Lowest industry |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Links to its own redirects | 26.9% | Church, 45% | Funeral home, 12% |
| Reuses a title tag | 18.3% | Fashion store, 30.9% | Dentist, 5.5% |
| No real 404 for a missing page | 12.8% | Auto dealer, 27.1% | Funeral home and spa, 0% |

Church (45%) and nonprofit (44%) websites link to their own redirects most, both groups whose sites run for years on edits from volunteers or office staff. Fashion stores (30.9%), furniture stores (29.9%) and photographers (29.1%) reuse titles most, likely because product, category and gallery pages are easy to publish from one template with one title. Auto dealers (27.1%), financial advisors (26.5%) and real estate agents (22.1%) hide missing pages most, a pattern that fits industries where many businesses buy their website from a vendor that serves one trade, so one template's default can repeat across every site built on it.

Some industries appear on more than one list. Auto dealer websites hide missing pages at more than twice the small business rate and link to their own redirects 38% of the time. Real estate websites reuse titles 28.8% of the time and hide missing pages 22.1% of the time. Dentists write the most distinct titles, at 5.5%, yet 21.2% of dentist websites hide missing pages. Funeral homes sit at the clean end of both the redirect and the missing-page checks.

## WordPress websites reuse fewer titles but link to more redirects

Which faults a website collects varies with its platform, and no platform avoids them all.

Reuses a title tag by website platform

WordPress

8.4%

Wix

13.1%

| Website platform | Reuses a title tag | Links to its own redirects |
| --- | --- | --- |
| WordPress | 8.4% | 39% |
| Wix | 13.1% | 12% |

WordPress and its SEO plugins build each page's title from the page's own name by default, so two pages share a title only if they share a name. A WordPress website that has been rebuilt, re-themed or had its address format changed over the years keeps the old links in its content until someone edits them. Webflow websites reuse titles 16.1% of the time, and websites that do not name their platform, which include custom builds, 22.9%.

## Duplicate addresses and stray canonical tags are rare

1.6%

of small business websites load working pages on both www and non-www with no redirect between them.

That is 82 websites, and on each one the website's own links use both versions, so the site itself tells search engines that both addresses are valid. Neither format is the standard: 50.1% of small business website pages sit on a www address and the rest on the bare domain. A related fault, the same page loading with and without a slash at the end of its address, affects 1.1% of small business websites, 55 in all, mostly after a move between platforms that disagree on slashes.

Canonical tags limit the damage. 81.9% of small business websites use one on at least one page, and when both versions of an address load but the tag names one of them, Google usually merges the two. A small group gets the tag itself wrong. 1.4% of small business websites, 74 in all, have a page whose canonical tag names a different domain as the original: 11 embed booking pages that point to the booking tool's own domain, 7 insurance agents run pages that point to their national parent brand, and 9 launched with a staging, preview or development address still in the tag, including localhost, a developer's own computer. 0.8% point the tag at an address that redirects, and 0.1% at one that is broken.

The basic files are mostly in place: 83.2% of small business websites have a sitemap, the file that lists a website's pages for search engines, and 87.8% have a robots.txt file, which tells crawlers what they may visit.

## What this means for small business owners

Start with the common faults, because they are the ones most likely to be on your website. Click through your menu and footer and look for links that forward somewhere else, and change each one to point straight at the page's current address. Then search Google for site:yourdomain.com and read down the list of titles: if a title appears more than once, rewrite each so it names the page's topic first and your business second, and give each page its own meta description.

Next, type your domain followed by a made-up path, such as /test-404-page. You should see an error page, and a free HTTP status checker should report 404. If you land on the homepage, switch off the redirect-all-404s setting or plugin, and redirect deleted pages one by one to their closest match instead. While you are there, type your domain with and without www and confirm both end up at the same address.

After any redesign, platform change or domain move, check the canonical tag in the page source of a few pages and make sure it names your live domain. A website that gets one of these settings wrong often gets others wrong too, which is why technical seo services (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/technical-seo-services) check them together and fix the templates, so new pages start clean.
