Copy stat ## Summary A bakery owner sits down to build her first website and gets three different answers from three friends: WordPress, Wix, Squarespace. The platform she picks, the software her site is built and edited in, decides who can help her, which add-ons she can use and how much upkeep the site needs for years. Platform share shows where the help is. The most used platform has the most developers, themes, plugins and tutorials, and the most businesses that have already solved the problem you are about to face. It also shows which way small businesses are moving, including the rise of online stores as business websites. WordPress is the default by a wide margin. It runs **32.9%** of small business websites, seven times more than any other platform. Wix is third, not second: Shopify holds second place at 4.6%, ahead of Wix at 2.9% and Squarespace at 1.6%. ## What we measured We used the September 2026 HTTP Archive, a public dataset that tests millions of websites every month and records the technologies each homepage runs on. We took every homepage of a website ranked outside the top million by Google's Chrome UX Report, 14,687,628 homepages, the group where most small and local business websites sit, and counted how many run on each website platform. A website platform, or content management system (CMS), is the software a site is built and edited in: WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace and so on. We report each platform's share two ways: as a share of all small business websites, and as a share of websites built on a recognizable content management system. ## WordPress is seven times bigger than the next platform 32.9% of small business websites run on WordPress. That is 4,831,538 websites. Shopify, in second place, runs 4.6%. The next five platforms, Wix, Squarespace, Joomla, Drupal and Webflow, add up to 7.1% combined, less than a quarter of WordPress's share. Tilda and 1C-Bitrix are popular in Russian-speaking markets and Jimdo in Germany, a reminder that small business websites worldwide are counted here, not only US ones. ## Shopify, not Wix, is second Shopify runs 682,426 small business websites, well ahead of Wix at 420,614 and Squarespace at 238,661. Many small sellers now run their business website and their online store as one Shopify site, so the store has become the website. Further down, Webflow, with 108,304 websites, edges out Duda, with 93,549, for seventh place. Store software is spread through the list. Besides Shopify, PrestaShop (0.5% of small business websites) and Magento (0.2%) are built mainly for online stores, and many WordPress sites run a store through a plugin. For many small businesses, the question is no longer whether to sell online but which platform to sell on. ## WordPress leads in every cut of the data Among small business websites built on a content management system, WordPress holds 64%, nearly two out of three. Shopify holds 9%, Wix 5.6% and Squarespace 3.2%. Counted either way, the order barely changes and the gap between WordPress and everything else stays the same size: seven to one against Shopify. For a business owner, that means the largest pool of developers, themes and plugins, and a large community keeping it updated. It also means the most sites that need regular updates and security care. ## What this means for small business owners choosing a platform If you are picking a platform, WordPress offers the widest choice of help and add-ons, and it needs regular upkeep: core, theme and plugin updates, backups and security. Hosted builders such as Shopify, Wix and Squarespace trade some flexibility for less maintenance, because the platform handles updates for you. If you sell products, Shopify's second place is a signal that many small businesses now treat the store as the website. Choose based on what the site needs to do in three years, not on what is easiest this week.
