## Summary

A searcher scans a page of Google results. One listing reads "Emergency Plumbing Repair in Tampa, Open 24 Hours | Smith...", cut off before the business name. Another reads just "Home". Neither tells the searcher everything the site owner wanted to say, and both lose clicks to the listing that fits.

That clickable blue headline is the title tag, a line in each page's code that names the page. Google shows roughly the first 60 characters and replaces the rest with an ellipsis, so the words at the end, often the brand or the offer, disappear. A title that is too short wastes the most visible line a site has in search.

**23.5%** of the homepage titles of the 500,000 most visited websites run past 60 characters and are likely to be cut, about one in four. Short titles are even more common: 38.3% are under 30 characters. That leaves 38.2% in the useful middle band of 30 to 60 characters.

## What we measured

We used the September 2026 HTTP Archive, a public dataset that tests millions of websites every month, and read the homepage code of the 500,000 most visited websites. We took the title tag of each homepage, 352,917 titles in all, removed extra spaces and counted the characters. We grouped sites by popularity using Google's Chrome UX Report into the 10,000 most visited and the rest.

A title is "too long" when it runs past 60 characters, where Google usually cuts titles off on desktop results. We also counted titles over 70 characters, where a large part is hidden, and titles under 30 characters, which leave most of the space unused. The median is the middle title: half are shorter, half are longer.

## One in four homepage titles gets cut off

23.5%

of the homepage titles of the 500,000 most visited websites are too long to show in full on Google.

Half of these long titles are very long. 12.1% of all homepage titles run past 70 characters, and at that length a searcher sees only the first part. The words lost at the end are often the brand name, the location or a call to action.

## Short titles are the bigger problem

By count, short titles are more common than long ones. 38.3% of homepage titles are under 30 characters, against the 23.5% that run too long. A title that short usually holds a brand name and little else, which tells a searcher who you are but not what you offer or where.

The typical title is well within the limit. The median homepage title is 40 characters, so most sites have room to add a short description of what they do before reaching the cutoff. Only 38.2% of homepages sit in the 30-to-60 band, where a title has room for a brand plus a plain description of the offer and still shows in full.

## Popular sites write longer titles

The most visited websites are more likely to overrun. 28.3% of the homepage titles of the 10,000 most visited sites run past 60 characters and 14.9% past 70, against 23.4% and 12% for other top-500,000 sites. Their median title is 47 characters, seven more than everyone else.

Big sites have more to say, with several product lines, a tagline and a brand to fit in. The longer the title, the more likely Google trims it or rewrites it with its own choice of words.

## What this means for site owners

Look at your homepage title in a search result preview. If it runs past about 60 characters, move the most important words to the front: what you do and where, then the brand. If it is only your brand name, add a short phrase that says what you offer, such as "Water Heater Repair in Tampa | Smith Plumbing".

Apply the same check to your top landing pages. A title that shows in full and names the offer gives searchers a reason to click, and one that is cut off or empty of meaning gives them a reason to choose the next result.

Our on page seo services (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/on-page-seo-services) rewrite title tags across a site so each one fits the space and names what the page offers.
