**64.8%** of online stores load no advertising pixel on their homepage, so their ad platforms cannot see who visits or buys. Shopify stores do better, with 63.6% running at least one pixel, and the stores that track at all run 1.26 pixels on average.

## Key Findings

1. 1. **64.8%** of online stores load no advertising pixel on their homepage, against 36.4% of Shopify stores. Copy stat
2. 2. Online stores that run any advertising pixel load **1.26** on average, so a typical tracking store measures one ad platform and occasionally two. Copy stat
3. 3. Online stores among the most visited million websites average **0.94** advertising pixels per homepage, more than twice the 0.44 average for online stores overall. Copy stat
4. 4. The Meta Pixel is on **30.7%** of online stores, more than 20 times the Pinterest tag (1.35%), the next most common social pixel on stores. Copy stat
5. 5. German websites average **0.14** advertising pixels per homepage, about a third of the 0.44 average for online stores. Copy stat

## Summary

A store owner boosts a few Instagram posts, then checks the results. The ad platform reports clicks, but not a single sale, because nothing on the store's website tells Meta that anyone bought. That is the position of most online stores.

An advertising pixel is a small piece of code from an ad platform such as Meta, TikTok or Pinterest. It records visits and purchases so the platform can report which ads led to sales, find more people like the buyers and show ads to visitors who left without buying. Without one, a store pays for ads that it cannot measure and that the platform cannot optimize.

Most stores have none. **64.8%** of online stores load no advertising pixel on their homepage. The average store loads 0.44 pixels, and even the 35.2% that do track run 1.26 on average: one platform, sometimes two. The talk of stores drowning in tracking tags does not match what is on their homepages.

## What we measured

We used the September 2026 HTTP Archive crawl, a public record of the technology on website homepages. We kept the 3,911,812 homepages running ecommerce technology, including every Shopify store, and counted how many of 12 advertising platforms' tracking pixels each loads, including those from Meta, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Reddit and Snap. We averaged the count across all stores and across stores with at least one pixel, and compared stores with other site types, popularity ranks and country domains.

An advertising pixel, or ad pixel, is any of those 12 platforms' tracking codes. The average counts every store, including those with none, so 0.44 means fewer than one pixel per store. A site's popularity rank places it among the most visited 1,000, 10,000, 100,000 websites and so on.

64.8% of online stores show no advertising pixel on their homepage. Among the 35.2% that do, the average is 1.26 pixels, so a typical tracking store runs one ad platform, and a minority add a second.

| B2B sites with marketing automation | 0.69 | 43.7% |
| All online stores | 0.44 | 35.2% |
| WordPress sites | 0.24 | 19.2% |

Shopify stores are the most tracked group, at 0.75 pixels on average, with 63.6% running at least one, close to double the rate of online stores overall. Shopify's Facebook, Instagram and TikTok sales channel apps install the pixel as part of setup, which makes the step automatic.

## Bigger stores track twice as much

Online stores among the most visited million websites average 0.94 advertising pixels per homepage, more than twice the 0.44 store average. Bigger stores tend to advertise on more platforms, and each platform they add brings its own pixel.

Across all websites the average is 0.26 pixels, and it peaks at 0.51 for sites ranked between 1,000 and 100,000. Stores sit well above the web as a whole because selling online is the use case ad pixels were built for.

By country domain, Australian websites match the online store average at 0.44 pixels, with 35.7% running at least one. UK websites average 0.27, Canadian 0.31 and .us websites 0.24. German websites average 0.14, French 0.18 and Spanish 0.21, reflecting the EU's rules requiring consent before tracking.

## Meta is the pixel stores choose first

The Meta Pixel is on 30.7% of online stores. Every other social tool is far behind: the Pinterest tag is on 1.35% of stores, the LinkedIn Insight Tag on 0.96% and the Snap Pixel on 0.15%.

That explains the low averages. With the Meta Pixel on 30.7% of stores and any ad pixel on 35.2%, about 87% of stores that track anything run Meta, and few add another platform. For most stores, ad tracking means Facebook and Instagram, and nothing else.

## What this means for online store owners

If you run ads without a pixel, fix that first. Install the pixel for every platform you actually advertise on and set up purchase events, so the platform learns who buys and can find more people like them. On Shopify, the platform's sales channel app does most of the work.

Then check what you already have. Remove pixels for platforms you stopped using: each one adds code to the page and sends visitor data to another company. For the ones you keep, send purchase events from your server as well as the browser, so the platform still sees sales that ad blockers and browser limits hide. An ecommerce facebook ads agency (https://www.suffdigital.com/services/paid-social/ecommerce-paid-social) can set up that tracking once and make sure every ad dollar is measured.
