Copy stat ## Summary A couple visiting a new city shortlists a restaurant on Google Maps: 4.6 stars, thousands of reviews. Before booking, one of them checks Tripadvisor and finds the same place at 4.4. Nothing changed about the food. The two sites simply score the same restaurant differently. Diners use both sites to decide where to eat, and a restaurant's rating is often the first filter. When the same restaurant scores lower on one platform, it can fall below that line for everyone who checks there first. It happens to most restaurants. **70.5%** of restaurants listed on both platforms rate lower on Tripadvisor than on Google. The difference is about a tenth of a star on average, 4.41 against 4.52, and it is consistent: fewer than half the restaurants that reach 4.5 stars on Google do so on Tripadvisor. ## What we measured The study covers the top restaurant listings on Tripadvisor and Google Maps in 25 large US cities on September 23, 2026, from a licensed data provider. We matched the same restaurants across both platforms, 95 pairs in all. For each restaurant we compared its star rating and its number of reviews on each platform. A restaurant's rating is the average of the star ratings its diners have left, from 1 to 5. The rating difference is the Tripadvisor rating minus the Google rating, so a negative number means the restaurant scores lower on Tripadvisor. The median review count is the middle restaurant: half have more reviews, half have fewer. ## Seven in ten restaurants rate lower on Tripadvisor 70.5% of restaurants listed on both Tripadvisor and Google have a lower rating on Tripadvisor. The most common difference is 0.1 to 0.2 stars, which covers 56.8% of restaurants. 10.5% rate 0.3 to 0.4 stars lower on Tripadvisor and 3.2% rate half a star or more lower. 17.9% have the same rating on both platforms and 11.6% rate higher on Tripadvisor. A gap that ran randomly in both directions would say little; a gap that runs the same way for seven restaurants in ten says the platforms themselves differ. ## Fewer restaurants reach 4.5 stars on Tripadvisor The tenth of a star matters most at the 4.5 mark. 73.7% of the restaurants hold 4.5 stars or more on Google, about three in four. On Tripadvisor, 43.2% do, fewer than half. Diners filtering or skimming for 4.5 and above will pass over the restaurant on one platform while picking it on the other. ## Google carries three times as many restaurant reviews The median restaurant has 2,061 Google reviews against 639 on Tripadvisor, more than three times as many, and 92.6% of the restaurants have more reviews on Google. A Google rating is built on a far larger crowd. That volume steadies the Google score: with thousands of reviews, a few disappointed diners move it very little. On Tripadvisor, each review carries more weight, so a run of critical reviews shows up faster. Both are read by diners, which is why a restaurant cannot afford to watch only one. ## The biggest gaps go both ways The widest drop is a Houston seafood restaurant rated 4.0 stars on Tripadvisor and 4.7 on Google, a 0.7-star gap. Next come a Jacksonville restaurant at 3.8 against 4.3 and several restaurants, in El Paso, Charlotte and Austin, 0.4 stars lower on Tripadvisor. The gap runs the other way too. The largest gain on Tripadvisor is an El Paso restaurant rated 4.9 there and 4.3 on Google, a 0.6-star lead, followed by restaurants in San Antonio (0.4 higher), Oklahoma City (0.3) and Indianapolis (0.2). A restaurant popular with visitors can do better on the travel site than with the local crowd on Google. ## What this means for restaurants Expect your Tripadvisor rating to sit a little below your Google rating, and watch both. Diners check either one before booking. If your Google rating is 4.5, assume your Tripadvisor rating may be the one that decides whether a visitor books. Reply to reviews on both platforms, and ask happy guests to review you on the one where your rating trails: a card with the bill or a follow-up message after a reservation works. A gap of 0.3 stars or more is unusual, found at about one restaurant in seven, so if yours is that wide, read your recent Tripadvisor reviews for a pattern and fix it. Keep your hours, menu and photos current on both platforms so neither shows outdated information.
