Copy stat ## Summary A retired customer checks a hardware store's website on his phone for opening hours. The hours sit in light gray text on a white footer, and outside in the sun he cannot make them out. He guesses, drives over and finds the store closed. Nothing on the page was broken; the text was simply too faint to read. Contrast is the difference in brightness between text and its background. When it is too low, people with low vision, older readers and anyone on a phone in sunlight struggle to read the page. The web's accessibility standard, WCAG, sets a minimum: a contrast ratio of 4.5 to 1 for normal text and 3 to 1 for large text. Meeting it is one of the easiest accessibility wins there is, because the fix is usually a darker shade of the same color. Two out of three websites miss that standard. **68.6%** of website homepages have at least one piece of text below the minimum contrast, more than any other accessibility problem, and small business websites fail more often than the web's most visited sites. ## What we measured We used the September 2026 HTTP Archive, a public dataset that tests millions of websites every month, and took the color contrast result from Google's Lighthouse test for 14,613,341 mobile homepages with text to check. Lighthouse is Google's free website testing tool, built into the Chrome browser. Its contrast check compares each piece of text on the page with its background against the WCAG AA standard: 4.5 to 1 for normal text and 3 to 1 for large text. One piece of text below the line fails the page. We grouped homepages by popularity using Google's Chrome UX Report: the 10,000 most visited websites, websites ranked 10,000 to 1 million, and websites outside the top million, where most small and local business websites sit. ## Two out of three homepages fail contrast 68.6% of website homepages have text that fails the color contrast standard. That is 10,023,427 homepages. The failure rate barely changes with popularity: the 10,000 most visited websites do a little better at 62.5%, but most of them still fail. Websites ranked 10,000 to 1 million fail at 64.6%, and websites outside the top million at 68.8%. Small items such as footer links, the gray hint text inside a form field or a light button label matter to a reader who cannot see them, and they are often the text a customer needs most: the phone number, the opening hours, the "Book now" button. ## Contrast failures outnumber every other accessibility problem Missing image alt text, the written description a screen reader reads aloud, is another frequent failure, on 26.2% of homepages. Contrast problems are more than twice as common. They come from design choices: light gray body text, thin fonts on white, pastel buttons with white labels and text laid over photos. Websites running an accessibility overlay, a toolbar added to fix accessibility after the page loads, still fail contrast at 62.6%, six points better than the web as a whole. Designers are not immune either: in a separate Suff Digital test of 333 US web design and marketing agency homepages, color contrast was the most common failure, at 57.1%. Contrast is fixed in a site's color palette, not added on top. ## What this means for business owners and designers Check your brand palette with a free contrast checker before you touch anything else. If body text, links or button labels fall below 4.5 to 1 against their background, pick a darker shade and apply it across the site. That single change can clear the most common accessibility failure on the web. Then look at the places where contrast usually breaks: text on photos, light gray footer text, gray hint text inside form fields and buttons in pale brand colors. Add a contrast check to every design review so new pages do not bring the problem back.
