## Key takeaways

- **Squarespace SEO Checklist:** Use this guide to decide what to fix first, what can wait, and how the work should support better organic visibility and more qualified traffic.

Squarespace can rank on Google, but it ships with defaults that work against you: auto-generated URLs with folder prefixes, title tags that repeat your site name, and image files that are 3 to 5 times larger than they need to be. Fix those defaults first, then build the metadata and content structure that earns rankings. This guide walks through the changes in order, starting with the ones that move rankings fastest.

If you would rather bring in a Squarespace SEO expert to handle it, our team can; this guide covers the tactical fixes you can make yourself.

## Fix the platform defaults that hurt you

Squarespace makes a set of decisions for you at setup. Three of them cost rankings.

**URL structure.** Squarespace prefixes blog post URLs with the collection slug, so a post lands at /blog/my-post instead of /my-post. Collection pages also generate dated or ID-based slugs if you are not careful. Set the URL slug on every page and post by hand. Keep it to 3 to 5 words, lowercase, hyphen-separated, no stop words. A URL like /squarespace-seo beats /blog/2026/03/squarespace-seo-tips-and-tricks-for-beginners.

**Title tags.** By default Squarespace appends your site title to every page, so you burn 15 to 25 characters on your brand name before the keyword shows up. Go to each page's SEO panel and write the title tag directly. Put the primary keyword in the first 30 characters. Keep the full tag under 60 characters so Google does not truncate it in the results.

**Trailing site-title clutter.** Check Settings then SEO then the site-wide title format. Remove any format that forces your business name into the front of every title. You want the format to be page title only, or page title followed by a short brand suffix.

Making these three changes on a 20-page site takes about 90 minutes and touches every URL Google indexes.

## Speed up a Squarespace site

Squarespace hosts your CSS and JavaScript, so you cannot rewrite the render path. You can still cut page weight, which is where most Squarespace speed problems live.

- **Compress images before upload.** Squarespace serves images at up to 2500px wide. Resize hero images to 1920px and inline images to 1200px, then run them through a compressor before you upload. A typical hero drops from 1.8MB to 250KB.
- **Limit fonts to two families and four weights.** Every extra weight is a separate font file. Four weights is usually plenty for a marketing site.
- **Turn off unused blocks.** Video backgrounds, embedded maps, and third-party widgets each add 100KB to 400KB. Remove the ones that do not earn their weight.
- **Use the built-in AMP toggle only if you publish news-style content.** For most business sites, leave it off. It strips styling and rarely helps.

Run every important page through PageSpeed Insights. On Squarespace, a Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds on mobile is achievable if your hero image is compressed and you are not loading a video background. If the template itself is the bottleneck, a rebuild through Squarespace web design (https://www.suffdigital.com/services/web-design/squarespace-platform) can start from a lighter layout instead of patching a heavy one.

## Set page titles, descriptions, and social metadata

Squarespace gives you an SEO panel on every page and post. Fill in all of it.

| Field | Rule | Character target |
| --- | --- | --- |
| SEO title | Primary keyword first, brand last | Under 60 |
| SEO description | One benefit plus one action | 140 to 155 |
| URL slug | 3 to 5 words, hyphenated | Under 60 |
| Open Graph image | 1200 by 630px, compressed | Under 200KB |

The SEO description does not directly change rankings, but it drives click-through rate from the results page, and click-through feeds back into how Google ranks you. Write it for the person deciding whether to click, not for a crawler.

## Structure content so Google can read it

Squarespace text blocks let you apply heading levels, and most site owners never do. Google uses heading structure to understand what a page is about.

1. **One H1 per page.** Squarespace uses your page title as the H1 by default. Do not add a second H1 in a text block.
2. **H2 for each main section.** Put your target keyword or a close variant in at least one H2.
3. **Short paragraphs.** Two to four sentences. Long walls of text lose readers on mobile, and Squarespace's default line length runs wide on desktop.
4. **Internal links in body copy.** Squarespace does not build these for you. Add 3 to 5 contextual links per page to related pages and posts.

For a full technical pass, work through our technical SEO checklist (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/technical-seo-checklist). If you are comparing platforms, our WordPress SEO settings (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/wordpress-seo-checklist) guide covers the same ground for WordPress sites.

## Add schema and rich result markup

Squarespace does not generate structured data for most page types, so Google reads your pages with less context than it could. You can add JSON-LD through code injection to close the gap.

- **LocalBusiness schema** in the site-wide header injection for a service business with a physical location. Include name, address, phone, hours, and geo coordinates.
- **Article schema** on blog posts, with headline, author, and publish date. Squarespace exposes these values, so the markup can stay accurate.
- **FAQ schema** on pages that answer common questions, which can earn expanded listings on some queries.
- **Product schema** if you run Squarespace Commerce and want price and availability in the results.

Add the code in Settings then Advanced then Code Injection for site-wide markup, or in the page-level code injection for a single page. Validate every template in Google's Rich Results Test using the live URL. A schema block with one wrong field disables the rich result silently, so test rather than assume.

## Handle blog and collection pages

Squarespace blogs generate tag and category archive pages automatically. Left alone, they create thin, near-duplicate pages that dilute your crawl budget.

- **Noindex tag and category archives** unless you have written real intro copy for them. You can do this per-collection in the SEO settings.
- **Set featured images** on every post. They become the Open Graph image and the thumbnail in blog listing views.
- **Write a unique meta description** for each post. Do not let Squarespace pull the first 155 characters of body text.

If a category page ranks and converts, keep it indexed and add 150 to 300 words of context above the post list. If it exists only because Squarespace made it, noindex it.

## Build internal links and topic clusters

Squarespace gives you no automatic internal linking, so link paths are entirely on you. Internal links spread ranking signals and help Google understand which pages relate. A site with strong internal links ranks deeper pages that would otherwise sit invisible.

1. **Pick a pillar page per service or topic.** This is the page you most want to rank.
2. **Link every related post back to the pillar** using descriptive anchor text, not "click here." Anchor text tells Google what the target page is about.
3. **Link the pillar out to its supporting posts** so the cluster connects both directions.
4. **Add 3 to 5 links inside body copy on every new page.** Do this as you publish, not in a cleanup pass six months later.

A practical rule: no important page should sit more than three clicks from the home page. Use the Squarespace navigation for the top level, then rely on in-content links to reach the rest. Check your work by clicking through as a first-time visitor would and noting any page you cannot reach.

## Set up analytics and Search Console

You cannot improve rankings you cannot measure. Squarespace has a built-in analytics panel, but it will not show you which queries you rank for.

1. Verify the site in Google Search Console using the built-in Squarespace integration under Settings then SEO.
2. Submit the sitemap. Squarespace generates it at /sitemap.xml automatically.
3. Connect Google Analytics 4 through the Squarespace code injection or the native integration.
4. Check Search Console every two weeks for pages that lost impressions or dropped in average position.

Search Console is where you find the queries you almost rank for, the ones sitting at positions 8 through 15 where a small content or title change can move you onto page one.

## Related terms

You may see this topic described with related searches like seo for photographers squarespace, seo settings squarespace, seo squarespace tips, seo tips squarespace, and seo title squarespace. Those phrases are useful when they clarify what the reader needs next, but they should still point back to one clear plan.

Related searches such as squarespace seo settings, squarespace tags seo, and squarespace vs wordpress (https://www.suffdigital.com/resources/guides/squarespace-vs-wordpress) seo are useful when they clarify what the reader needs next. They should support the same plan rather than pulling the page in several directions at once.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is Squarespace bad for SEO?** No. Squarespace can rank competitively for local and small-business terms. It has fewer controls than WordPress, so you cannot fix everything, but the controls it gives you cover most of what matters: titles, descriptions, URLs, headings, and image compression. The sites that fail on Squarespace usually failed to use those controls, not the platform itself.

**Why is my Squarespace site slow?** Almost always oversized images. Squarespace serves images at up to 2500px wide, and site owners upload full-resolution photos straight from a phone or camera. Resize and compress before upload and most Squarespace speed problems disappear. Video backgrounds and third-party embeds are the second most common cause.

**Can I edit the title tag on Squarespace?** Yes. Every page and blog post has an SEO panel with an SEO title field. Write the title there directly. Also check the site-wide title format in Settings then SEO so your brand name is not forced to the front of every title.

**How do I stop Squarespace from creating duplicate pages?** Noindex the auto-generated tag and category archive pages unless you have added unique intro copy to them. You can set this per collection in the SEO settings. This keeps Google focused on your real pages instead of thin archive pages.

**Can I add schema markup on Squarespace?** Yes, through code injection. Add JSON-LD in Settings then Advanced then Code Injection for site-wide markup like LocalBusiness, or in page-level code injection for a single page. Squarespace has no native schema builder, so you write the markup yourself and validate it in Google's Rich Results Test using the live URL.

### How much does Squarespace SEO expert cost?

SEO cost depends on competition, page count, technical issues, content volume, links, and how much implementation is included. A useful quote should show what will ship first and how that work connects to rankings, leads, or revenue.
