The cause is rarely a penalty: old addresses were not mapped, so every visitor and every link that used to land there now hits nothing. 02 ### Redirects piled on top of redirects After two or three moves, one old address can bounce through three others before it lands. Search engines waste time on the journey, and deleting any rule in the middle breaks the whole chain. 03 ### Your test site turns up in Google Either the unfinished copy of your site gets found and competes with the real one, or the instruction hiding it goes live and tells Google to forget your website. Every address on the site changes hands, and search engines have to relearn all of them while your customers carry on using it. ### The addresses decide whether the traffic survives. Every page that ranks today has an address that other sites link to and search engines have indexed. If that address changes without a rule sending the old one to its replacement, the ranking does not move across. It stops. So the map from old to new is the migration. It gets built from a crawl of what actually exists rather than from the remembered page list, because older pages with links are often missing from internal notes. ### Data rarely moves shape for shape. Products, customers, orders and posts are stored differently by every platform. Something always has to be reshaped, and the decisions about what to drop are easier to make deliberately in week one than under pressure in launch week. The parts that catch people out are the ones teams rarely list: the fields a plugin added, the redirects already in place from the last move, and whatever a connected system expects to find at a particular address. ### The rehearsal is most of the value. A switchover that has been practised on a copy is a routine morning. One that has not is an unplanned outage with an audience. The rehearsal is also where you find out how long the reversal takes, which is the only number that matters if something goes wrong. Agree what would make you turn back before you start, in writing.
