## Summary

A store owner types their best-selling product into Google and sees Amazon on the page. It is easy to conclude that Amazon owns the search and that there is no point competing. Look at where Amazon sits, though, and the picture changes: usually around fourth, below other stores, brands and publishers.

That matters because the top organic spot takes a large share of the clicks on a results page. If Amazon holds it, a smaller store is competing for what is left; if someone else holds it, the top spot is open to any site that builds the right page. Knowing how often Amazon actually wins tells an ecommerce team where Amazon is a real obstacle and where it is just a neighbor.

Amazon is usually on the page and rarely at the top. It appears on Google's first page for 66% of product searches but ranks #1 for **8.2%**. It reaches the top three for 30.9%, and its best listing sits at position 4 at the median.

## What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we analyzed Google's US desktop first page, sourced from a licensed search data provider, for 3,995 product searches built around 100 popular products. On each of them Google showed a Popular Products block, a strong sign the searcher wants to buy. For each search we recorded the top 10 organic results and noted every amazon.com listing and its position.

Organic results are the ordinary listings Google ranks on merit, not the paid ads or shopping boxes around them, so position 3 means the third organic listing. "Page one" means the top 10 organic results. Amazon's best position on a search is its highest-ranked listing when it has more than one. We also sorted each Amazon listing by page type: search results pages, Best Sellers lists, brand stores, browse categories and single product pages.

## Amazon is on most product searches but rarely first

8.2%

of Google product searches have Amazon in the #1 organic spot.

Amazon appeared on Google's first page for 2,638 of the 3,995 product searches, 66%. On those searches its best listing sat at position 4 at the median and just under 4 on average. It made the top three on 30.9% of all product searches and took the #1 spot on 326 of them, 8.2%.

Amazon also rarely takes more than one slot. It averaged 1.04 listings per results page when present, and Amazon listings make up 8.4% of all page-one organic results, roughly one slot in ten. In other words, Amazon is a regular competitor on product searches, but on more than nine searches in ten it is not the result you need to beat for the top position.

## Office and electronics searches favor Amazon, apparel does not

Amazon's strength varies widely by category. It reached the top three for 69% of office supply searches, 46% of electronics and kitchen searches and 41% of fitness searches. In apparel it reached the top three for 8.1% of searches and appeared on page one for 36%, its lowest page-one rate of any category. Outdoor was its second-weakest category, with a 21% top-three rate.

The pattern follows how people shop. Office supplies and electronics are commodity purchases where the same item is sold everywhere, and Amazon's huge catalog matches almost any query. Clothing is bought by brand, fit and style, and Google sends apparel searches to brand sites and department stores instead.

## Google ranks Amazon's listing pages, not its product pages

Of Amazon's 2,752 page-one listings, 39% were Amazon search results pages, 25% Best Sellers lists, 13% brand storefronts and 6.3% browse categories. Single product pages made up 7.7%. The pattern holds at the very top: of the 326 times Amazon ranked #1, 53% were search results pages and 14% were product pages.

A broad product search is a request for options, and Google answers it with pages that list many products. Amazon ranks because it has a listing page for almost every phrase. Any store can compete the same way: a well-built category or collection page is the matching asset for a broad product search.

## What this means for online store owners

Do not assume Amazon owns your keywords. Check your own priority searches: on more than nine in ten product searches, the #1 spot belongs to someone other than Amazon, and often to a page type you can build yourself.

Match the page type Google prefers. Amazon wins with list pages, so for broad product terms your category and collection pages are the pages to build: a heading that matches the search, useful filters, a short buying guide and real product depth. Save product-page effort for exact model searches.

Know your category. In office supplies and electronics Amazon takes the top three on a large share of searches; in apparel and outdoor it rarely does. Working with an ecommerce seo services (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/ecommerce-seo-services) team that reviews who holds each position on your target searches shows where the top spot is realistically open.
