## Summary

A landscaping company opened in 2021. Its first customers left a handful of Google reviews, the owner was pleased, and nobody thought about it again. Three years later the profile shows the same dozen reviews, the newest one from last spring, and a competitor that opened last year already has more.

Reviews are the first thing a customer checks on a Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows a business's rating, reviews, hours and phone number in Google Search and Maps. A growing review count tells customers the business is busy and trusted today. A count that stopped moving tells them the opposite, and it gives Google less fresh information to rank the business on.

For most established small businesses, the count has stopped moving. **80.8%** got no more Google reviews this year than last, and the group as a whole grew 2%, from 2,866 reviews to 2,923. The growth in local reviews comes almost entirely from new businesses collecting their first ones.

## What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we analyzed the complete Google review histories of 4,394 established US small businesses: businesses with 20 or fewer lifetime reviews whose first review is more than two years old, from before September 2024. For each business we counted the reviews posted in the most recent 12 months and in the 12 months before that, then compared the totals overall and across 18 categories of local business. We repeated the comparison for 5,166 businesses that also include newer ones, whose first review came in the last two years.

A business counts as flat when it received the same number of reviews in both 12-month periods, as growing when it received more this year and as shrinking when it received fewer. Growth is the change in the total number of reviews the group received, from the earlier 12 months to the most recent 12.

## Most established businesses are not gaining reviews

60.7%

of established small businesses got exactly as many Google reviews this year as last year.

Add the 20.1% that got fewer, and 80.8% of established small businesses got no more reviews than the year before. The 19.2% that did grow barely outnumber the ones that shrank, so the two groups cancel out and total volume rose 2%, 57 more reviews across 4,394 businesses.

The pattern points to how these businesses got their reviews in the first place. A small business typically collects reviews from its first loyal customers or in one push, and then stops asking. Without a routine request after each job, the count levels off, and the date of the newest review drifts further into the past.

## New businesses drive the growth in Google reviews

Counting newer businesses changes the picture. Across 5,166 small businesses with a complete review history, review volume rose 39%, from 4,206 reviews to 5,848. The established businesses in that group grew 2%, so almost all of the increase came from businesses whose first review arrived in the last two years.

| Group | Businesses | Reviews, prior 12 months | Reviews, last 12 months | Change |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Established (first review before September 2024) | 4,394 | 2,866 | 2,923 | +2% |
| All small businesses, including newer ones | 5,166 | 4,206 | 5,848 | +39% |

New businesses start from zero and ask hard for their first reviews, because they have nothing to show a customer yet. That is the competition an established business faces in its own map results: a newcomer that can pass its review count within a year while the established profile stands still.

## Cleaning services grew, restaurants and hair salons shrank

The change in reviews varies widely by type of business. Small cleaning services got 50.4% more reviews this year than last, followed by electricians at 25.4% and landscapers at 21.9%. At the other end, small restaurants got 19.6% fewer, hair salons 17.3% fewer and auto repair shops 14.4% fewer.

0%

| Category | Change in Google reviews |
| --- | --- |
| Cleaning services | +50.4% |
| Electricians | +25.4% |
| Landscapers | +21.9% |
| Veterinarians | +16.7% |
| Real estate agents | +12.3% |
| Dentists | +2.9% |
| Plumbers | +0.9% |
| Chiropractors | 0% |
| Roofers | 0% |
| Daycares | -4.2% |
| Lawyers | -8.1% |
| HVAC companies | -13.3% |
| Auto repair shops | -14.4% |
| Hair salons | -17.3% |
| Restaurants | -19.6% |

The categories that grew are mostly home services booked job by job, where a finished job is a natural moment to ask for a review. The categories that shrank depend on repeat visits: a regular at a salon, a restaurant or a garage has usually reviewed the business once already and is rarely asked again. For those businesses, new reviews have to come from new customers, so a steady ask matters even more.

## What this means for local business owners

Check your own numbers first. Open your Google Business Profile and count the reviews from the last 12 months and the 12 before. If the number is flat or falling, your review requests have stalled, and newer competitors are likely catching up.

Make the request a routine, not a campaign. Send every customer a text or email after every job with a direct link to your Google review form, so reviews arrive every month instead of in one burst. A profile whose newest review is a week old looks active; one whose newest review is eight months old does not. Reply to the reviews you get, too, so customers see someone is paying attention.

If you run a salon, restaurant or repair shop that relies on regulars, ask first-time customers in particular, since your regulars have likely reviewed you already. Our local seo packages (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/local-seo-services) include review request systems that keep new Google reviews coming every month.
