Google changes the page title it shows for **64.5%** of its top 10 results, and shows the title exactly as the website wrote it for just 27.2%. Titles of 61 to 80 characters are rewritten most, 76.3% of the time.

## Key Findings

1. 1. Google rewrites the page title it shows for **64.5%** of its top 10 results, instead of the title tag the website wrote. Copy stat
2. 2. Google shows the website's own title tag unchanged for only **27.2%** of its top 10 results, and cuts it short with an ellipsis for another 8.3%. Copy stat
3. 3. For **44.5%** of its top 10 results, Google shows only part of the page's title tag, usually dropping a brand name or everything after a separator. Copy stat
4. 4. For **20%** of its top 10 results, Google shows a title with words that are not in the page's title tag at all, such as the page's main heading or an added brand name. Copy stat
5. 5. Google rewrites **76.3%** of page titles 61 to 80 characters long, against 58.5% of titles of 30 characters or fewer. Copy stat

## Summary

A content writer spends twenty minutes on a page title: the keyword up front, a benefit, the brand at the end. The page ranks on Google's first page. When she searches for it, the blue headline under which it appears says something shorter, or something she never wrote.

The title tag is the line of code where a website tells search engines what a page is called, and Google normally uses it as the clickable headline in its results. That headline is the first thing a searcher reads and often the deciding factor in which result they click. But Google treats the title tag as a suggestion, and when it thinks another wording describes the page better, it writes its own.

It does that most of the time. Google rewrites the title for **64.5%** of its top 10 results and shows the title tag exactly as written for only 27.2%. Most rewrites are trims that keep the writer's words but drop part of them; one result in five gets a title with words the website never put in its title tag.

## What we measured

On September 23 and 24, 2026 we searched 10,000 US keywords on Google desktop and recorded the title Google displayed for each organic top 10 result, 35,842 results in all. We then loaded each ranking page and read the title tag in its code. We compared the two after ignoring differences in capital letters, spacing, quote marks and dashes, and we compared rates by title length, ranking position and search intent.

A title counts as unchanged when Google shows the title tag as written. It counts as cut off when Google shows the start of the title tag followed by an ellipsis because it ran out of space; we do not count that as a rewrite. Everything else is a rewrite, which we split in two: partial titles, where Google shows only some of the title tag's words, and titles with new text, where Google adds words that are not in the title tag, often taken from the page's H1, the main heading on the page.

## Google rewrites two thirds of page titles

64.5%

of Google's top 10 results show a page title Google rewrote.

That leaves 27.2% of results shown with the website's own title unchanged and 8.3% cut short with an ellipsis. For a business, this means that on roughly two of every three first-page listings, the headline searchers read is at least partly Google's work rather than the website's.

The #1 result is rewritten a little less. It has its title rewritten 60.8% of the time, the lowest of any position, against 64% to 66% for positions 2 to 9. One likely reason is that the page Google ranks first is more often one whose title already matches what the searcher asked for.

## Most rewrites trim the title rather than replace it

44.5%

of Google's top 10 results show only part of the page's title tag.

The typical rewrite is a trim. Google drops a brand name, a tagline or everything after a separator such as a pipe or a dash, and keeps the part that answers the search. A title like "Emergency Plumber in Denver | Same-Day Service | Company Name" often appears as just its first segment. The words survive; the extras go.

Full replacement is less common but still frequent. For 20% of results, the displayed title includes words that are not in the title tag at all, such as the page's H1 heading or a brand name Google added. That tends to happen when the title tag is vague, stuffed with keywords or does not match what the page is about, so Google looks elsewhere on the page for a better description.

## Titles of 61 to 80 characters are rewritten most

Length matters, though not in a straight line. Titles of 61 to 80 characters are rewritten 76.3% of the time, the highest of any length. Titles of 30 characters or fewer are rewritten least, at 58.5%, and titles of 31 to 60 characters at 61.5%. Titles over 80 characters come in at 64.1%.

Titles in the 61 to 80 character range are too long to display in full, and they tend to be the ones with a keyword phrase followed by a string of extra segments, exactly what Google trims. By search intent, transactional searches, from people ready to buy or book, see the most rewrites at 68.5%, against 62% for navigational searches for a specific brand.

## What this means for SEO teams and content writers

Write every title on the assumption that Google may keep only its first part. Put the topic the page answers first and the brand last, keep the core of the title under about 60 characters, and avoid long chains of keywords after pipes and dashes, since those trailing segments are what Google drops most.

Then make your H1 a good title too. When Google replaces a title tag, it often borrows the main heading, so if the title and H1 say the same thing clearly, the listing reads well either way. Search for your own key pages to see what Google shows today, and rewrite any title that Google keeps replacing. Our on page seo services (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/on-page-seo-services) write titles and headings together for this reason.
