## Summary

A roofing company owner checks her rankings from her office computer and sees her site at #2 for "roof repair" in her city. A homeowner with a leak searches the same words on a phone from the driveway and sees a different list. The owner is making decisions from a ranking her customers may never see.

Google ranks pages separately for phones and computers and takes into account how each page works on a small screen. Most rank checks and most business owners' own searches still happen on desktop, while a large share of local customers search on a phone. When the two lists differ, the desktop view gives a false picture of where the business stands.

They differ for half of all searches. For **49.9%** of Google searches, the top three results on mobile are different from desktop, and for 18.8% the #1 result is a different page. When the top three changes, it usually brings in a different page rather than only reshuffling the same ones: 42.3% of searches have at least one top-three result that appears on only one device.

## What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we searched 10,000 US keywords from 24 industry keyword sets on Google, once on desktop and once on mobile, in US English and within the same hour so the two lists could be compared without day-to-day movement. For each keyword we took the top three organic results on each device, matched the mobile and desktop versions of the same page, and compared the two lists. We then split the results by industry, by search intent and by whether Google showed a local map pack.

Organic results are the regular listings, not ads or map listings. A search counts as having a different top three when the three pages or their order are not identical on both devices. A different set means at least one page appears in the top three on one device but not the other. Search intent is what the searcher wants: transactional searches are ready to buy or book, commercial searches compare options, informational searches want an answer and navigational searches look for a specific brand.

## Half of Google searches rank differently on a phone

49.9%

of Google searches show a different top three on mobile than on desktop.

That covers 4,988 of the 10,000 keywords. Most of these are not small swaps of position two and three. For 42.3% of searches, a page in the mobile top three is missing from the desktop top three altogether, and for 18.8% the page Google puts first is different on each device. On average, 2.41 of the three top results appear on both devices.

The top three positions take most of the clicks on a results page, so a business that holds #1 on desktop and #3 or lower on mobile gets a very different share of phone traffic than its desktop report suggests. The reverse also happens: some pages rank better on mobile than on desktop, and a desktop-only rank check misses that too.

## Home service searches reshuffle the most

67.2%

of home remodeling searches on Google show a different top three on mobile than on desktop.

Home remodeling leads, followed by home security (65.5%), roofing (64.6%), weddings (64.4%) and HVAC (62.1%). In each of these, more than half of searches have at least one different page in the top three, not only a different order. These are industries where customers often search on a phone at the moment they need help, and where many small local companies compete for the same few spots.

Finance, property and senior care are the most stable. Real estate searches differ 34.9% of the time, senior care 39.4% and banking and loans 39.8%. In these industries the same pages hold the top spots on both devices more often, so a desktop rank check is closer to what a phone user sees.

## Searches from people ready to buy differ most

By intent, transactional searches, from people ready to buy or book, show a different top three on mobile 57.7% of the time. Commercial searches (48.4%) and informational searches (48.1%) sit near the average, and navigational searches, where the searcher wants one specific brand, are the most stable at 40.9%.

## What this means for local service businesses

Track your rankings on mobile as well as desktop, and treat the mobile number as the one that counts if your customers search on phones. Most rank-tracking tools let you choose the device; set up both and compare them for your most valuable searches. If you check by hand, search from your phone, logged out, from the area you serve.

Then look at your pages on a phone the way a customer would. Mobile rankings reward pages that load quickly, read easily without zooming and make it one tap to call or book. For home service companies, where about two in three top-three lists change on a phone, this is where rankings are won. Our seo for contractors (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/seo-for-contractors) programs report mobile and desktop rankings separately for exactly this reason.
