## Summary

Someone asks ChatGPT how to turn off automatic updates in Windows or how to reset a laptop to factory settings. The answer walks through the steps and cites its source: the manufacturer's own support article. The help center, written for existing customers, has become the reference AI engines read when they explain how software works.

That matters to any software or hardware company. A citation is the source link an AI engine shows with its answer, and a help article that gets cited supplies the instructions the engine repeats to your customers. If the article is clear and current, the answer is right. If it is missing, gated behind a login or out of date, the engine takes its instructions from someone else or repeats the old ones.

Help pages make up 10% of the web pages AI engines cite for software and tech questions, and on ChatGPT more than one in five. The citations are highly concentrated: Microsoft alone supplies **51%** of all the help and documentation pages cited, more than every other company combined.

## What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we asked 500 software and tech questions, from "best software" questions to how-to questions about devices, apps and AI tools, to five AI engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews (the AI summary above Google's search results). Each question was asked twice. The answers cited 26,116 web pages in total.

A help page is a help center, support, knowledge base or developer documentation page: the articles a company publishes to explain how to set up, use or fix its product, as opposed to its marketing or product pages. We counted help pages by AI engine and by the website they came from. Each share is a share of citations, so a page cited three times counts three times.

## One software citation in ten is a help page

10%

of the web pages AI engines cite for software and tech questions are help or documentation pages.

That is 2,634 help pages out of 26,116 citations. Help content is written to answer a narrow practical question in a few steps, which is the shape of many software questions people ask AI: how to do something, why something is not working, what a setting does. An AI engine that needs a precise instruction finds the product's own documentation the most direct source.

For software companies, help centers usually sit outside the marketing plan. These figures show they act as a public reference that AI engines read and quote, and a thin or gated help center leaves that space to forums, blogs and competitors.

## ChatGPT cites help pages four times as often as Gemini

21.7%

of ChatGPT's citations for software questions point to a help or documentation page.

ChatGPT is the most documentation-heavy engine by a wide margin. More than one in five of its software citations is a support article, a knowledge base entry or a developer page. Perplexity comes second at 12.1%, then Google AI Overviews at 8% and Google AI Mode at 6.3%.

Gemini cites more web pages than ChatGPT on these questions, 4,669 against 3,429, but 4.7% of them are help pages. The difference means the same how-to question can be answered from a vendor's own instructions on ChatGPT and from third-party articles on Gemini, so a vendor's documentation has most influence on ChatGPT's answers.

## Microsoft supplies half of all cited help pages

51%

of the help pages AI engines cite for software questions belong to Microsoft.

Two Microsoft websites top the list: its support site with 681 citations and its learning and documentation site with 662. With other Microsoft pages, Microsoft accounts for 1,344 of the 2,634 help page citations. Microsoft publishes documentation for nearly every Windows and Office setting and error message, so AI engines rely on it for a large share of everyday tech questions.

Hardware makers follow. Apple's support site has 193 citations, and Dell, HP, Lenovo and ASUS support pages all rank in the top ten, because device questions are answered from the manufacturer's instructions. OpenAI's help center (98) and developer documentation (30) show that AI tools themselves now generate how-to questions, and G2's learning hub (52) is the one software review site in the top ten.

## What this means for software companies

Treat your help center as a search asset. Keep documentation public and readable without a login, give each article a clear question-style title, and put the answer in the first lines, since that is what an AI engine lifts into its reply. One article per task is easier to cite than a long page covering everything.

Keep it current. An outdated setting or retired feature in a help article can be repeated back to your customers by ChatGPT. Add dates or version numbers so readers and AI engines can tell which instructions apply, and redirect retired articles instead of leaving them live.

Then check how AI engines explain your product: ask ChatGPT and Perplexity your customers' most common how-to questions and see whose instructions they cite. A saas seo agency (https://www.suffdigital.com/seo/saas-seo-agency) can review your help center with this in mind, so the answer AI gives your customers comes from your own documentation.
