Copy stat ## Summary A locksmith in a mid-size city has a perfect 5.0 rating from hundreds of customers. Someone locked out of their car asks ChatGPT for the best locksmith in town. Whether that business gets named depends less on its rating than most owners would expect. AI assistants are becoming a way people choose local businesses. When ChatGPT or Gemini answers "what are the best dentists in Denver?", it names a handful of businesses and leaves out the rest. A business that customers rate highest has earned a place in that answer, and a business owner would reasonably expect a top rating to be the thing that gets it named. It is less than half of the story. ChatGPT names the highest-rated business in town **46.2%** of the time, and Gemini 8.5% of the time. What moves the odds is the weight behind the rating: a top-rated business with 250 or more reviews is named 49.2% of the time, against 31.1% for one with 10 to 24. ## What we measured On September 23, 2026 we looked at 20 local services, from dentists and locksmiths to restaurants and personal injury lawyers, in 79 US cities. For each city and service we took the top 100 Google Maps listings and identified the highest-rated business with at least 10 reviews, using review count to break ties. That gave 1,578 city and service searches, each with one clear top-rated business. We then asked ChatGPT and Gemini "What are the best [service] in [city]?" for each search, and counted the top-rated business as named when it appeared in the answer. The rates here come from that first round of answers. The highest-rated business is the one with the best Google star rating; its Maps position is where it appears in the Google Maps results for that service in that city. The median is the middle value: half the businesses sit above it, half below. ## ChatGPT passes over the best rated business half the time 46.2% of the time, ChatGPT names the highest-rated local business in town. Put the other way, in more than half of all city and service searches the business with the best Google rating is missing from ChatGPT's recommendations. Gemini leaves it out far more often: it names the top-rated business in 8.5% of searches, less than a fifth of ChatGPT's rate. At least one of the two assistants names it in 47.5% of searches, so Gemini rarely finds a top-rated business that ChatGPT missed. These are not obscure businesses. 1,508 of the 1,578 top-rated businesses have a perfect 5.0 rating, and the median one has 325 reviews. What they often lack is prominence: the median top-rated business sits at position 34 in Google Maps results, far below the handful of listings most searchers ever see. A perfect score on its own does not make a business the one an AI assistant picks up. ## More reviews behind the rating raise the odds The number of reviews behind a top rating changes how often ChatGPT names the business. Top-rated businesses with 10 to 24 reviews are named 31.1% of the time. The rate climbs with every band, to 39.8% at 50 to 99 reviews and 49.2% at 250 or more, about 1.6 times as often as the smallest group. A 5.0 rating from a dozen customers and a 5.0 rating from several hundred look the same on the stars, but the larger review history gives an AI assistant more text, more mentions and more signals that the business is established. For a business owner, the rating gets you into contention and the volume behind it gets you named. ## Locksmiths get named, restaurants get passed over The type of business matters as much as the rating. The top-rated locksmith is named by ChatGPT in 73% of cities, the top-rated pest control company in 70% and the top-rated personal injury lawyer in 66%. At the bottom, the top-rated restaurant is named in 5% of cities. Top-rated locksmiths and pest control companies sit at median positions of 19 and 23, well above the overall median of 34. It does not explain restaurants: the top-rated restaurant sits at a median position of 25 and is still named in 5% of cities. Restaurant answers draw on critics, guides and famous local names, so a highly rated neighborhood spot competes with places that have far more written about them. ## What this means for local businesses Treat a top rating as the entry ticket, not the finish line. Keep asking every customer for a review after every job: moving from a few dozen reviews to a few hundred is the clearest lever in this data, lifting ChatGPT's naming rate from under a third to about half. Then close the prominence gap. The typical top-rated business sits 34th on Google Maps, so improve the listing itself: complete every Google Business Profile field, choose accurate categories and link a website that says clearly what you do and where. If you are in a category where AI assistants lean on outside sources, such as restaurants, get listed and reviewed on the local guides and directories that write about your trade.
