Drupal Migration

    Drupal Migration Services

Get off an unsupported Drupal site without losing the pages, the rankings or the structure you spent years building.

Move or upgrade an aging Drupal site without losing the content structure, URLs and search traffic already working. Our Drupal migration services audit the module list first, recommend the safer route and then run the move end to end.

    Why Suff Digital

We will tell you when staying on Drupal is cheaper than leaving it.

Most companies selling Drupal migration services are paid to move you, so moving is always the recommendation. We audit your modules first, because that is what really decides whether an upgrade or a full move makes commercial sense. If upgrading is safer and cheaper, we will say so and quote for that instead.

What Our Drupal Migration Services Include

Drupal migration services cover the content model, module decisions, URL map, rebuild and rehearsed launch.

    (06)

Your content structure mapped before the build

Every content type, field and setting matched to its home on the new site, with anything that cannot be represented decided before building starts.

Categories and tags that stay connected

Your taxonomy and the links between terms and pages move as real relationships, so category and listing pages still know what belongs where.

    Every web address carried across

Your address and redirect tables move as data, with automatically generated addresses used only for pages created after the move.

A keep, replace or retire call on every module

Each module gets a decision and a reason, so you can see what has a future and what the site no longer uses.

Listing pages that return the same results

Views, feeds and display modes rebuilt against the new structure, with the address each one lives at treated as a requirement.

Multilingual sites that keep their language URLs

Translations, language switching and the tags telling search engines which language a page is in all get reconciled, so each keeps its address.

    See our process
    The problems

Problems we fix on ageing Drupal sites

Most Drupal migrations we are asked to run start with one of these six problems.

    Diagnose my site
    01

Your Drupal version no longer gets security updates

Once a Drupal version reaches end of life, security fixes stop for the core software and for most add-on modules. Your site is exposed, and for public sector and education teams that becomes an audit finding too.

    02

Your web addresses get rebuilt instead of carried over

Drupal keeps every page address in a table, so they can be copied across exactly. Let the new site generate them from a rule and most pages land correctly while older, hand-named pages quietly move. Those carry the most links.

    03

Drupal modules with no upgrade path

Most real functionality on a Drupal site comes from contributed modules, and many were never updated for current versions. If your forms, search or integrations depend on one, it does not come with you.

    04

Links between your content arrive as plain text

Drupal knows a case study belongs to a service, an author and a topic. A basic export flattens that into text, so related content boxes empty out and listing pages return the wrong things.

    05

The design is wired to the old content structure

Drupal themes call fields by name, so your design depends on content being shaped exactly as it is today. Improve the structure during the move and pages break in ways that look like content errors.

    06

Your editing history and approvals disappear

Most exports throw away previous versions of every page and the record of who changed what. On a brochure site that is a shrug. For a regulated or public sector organisation it is a compliance problem you cannot fix later.

    Our Drupal Migration Process

    (06)
    Phase 01
    Week 1

We audit your Drupal version and every module

We record your Drupal version, where it sits in the support cycle, and every module on the site. We check which still have an upgrade path, and crawl the live site for the pages search engines hold. The timings beside each step are an estimate rather than a final schedule. Your actual dates are agreed in the proposal.

    Phase 02
    Weeks 1 to 3

We map your content to the new site

Content types, fields, categories and the links between them get matched to the new structure, and anything that cannot come across gets a written decision. We record what your design depends on at the same time.

    Phase 03
    Weeks 3 to 6

We run the full migration onto a test site

The whole site moves onto a test environment with all of your content, and we check the result against the original: page counts by type, working links, images on the right pages. Then we repeat it.

    Phase 04
    Week 7

We check every web address against your live site

We take the addresses your live site serves and confirm each one resolves on the new site, rather than sampling a few. This decides whether search engines notice the move at all.

    Phase 05
    Launch day

We go live in a planned window

We move the remaining content, deploy the redirects and switch the domain at a quiet hour you choose. Before the window closes we confirm pages load and anything your users log in to still works.

    Phase 06
    Weeks 8 to 11

We watch your search traffic and fix what moves

After launch we compare the site against the numbers we took before it, watching address coverage in particular. We check older sections deliberately, because problems concentrate there.

    Get started
    Your search traffic

A Drupal move can keep every ranking you have. It comes down to how the addresses are handled.

Because Drupal stores every page address in a table, those addresses can be copied across exactly. So a Drupal move does not have to cost you traffic. The enquiries, applications and downloads your older pages bring in can keep arriving through the switch rather than dipping while the team rebuilds them later.

Your address and redirect tables are copied as data, not regenerated from a rule
Every address your live site serves is checked before launch, not a sample
Older sections are checked deliberately after launch, because problems concentrate there
    Managing the risk

Four ways a Drupal move can go wrong, and what stops each one.

What you are really buying from Drupal migration services is a named answer to each of these. If the launch breaches the limits you set beforehand, we put the old site back, using a rollback we already practised.

Search traffic. Category and listing pages can come back empty, so each is checked against what it returned before
Service continuity. Logins, forms and payment paths are tested live before the window closes
Your records. Page versions and approval trails are discarded unless we agree otherwise
Connected systems. Modules carry integrations that get rebuilt, not transferred

“I can't say enough good things about Matt Suffoletto and the team at Suff Digital. I've worked with Matt for years, and his knowledge, expertise, and professionalism are second to none. He truly understands SEO, website management, and digital marketing at a level that delivers real results. Matt helped me get my DJ business ranked on the first page and even the number one spot on Google in an industry with thousands of competing DJs. Those results had a tremendous impact on my business. Most recently, on Memorial Day, my website came under attack from internet hackers. I sent Matt an email expecting a delayed response because of the holiday, but he replied almost immediately, identified the problem, took action, and resolved the issue before it could cause further damage. If you're looking for a digital marketing and web services company that delivers results and stands behind its clients, I highly recommend Suff Digital.”

    Drupal Migration Deliverables

Drupal migration services should end with documents you can hand to anyone, not just a new website.

    Month One
    Where you are moving from
From Drupal 7 or another unsupported version — Content, categories, media and addresses all move. Modules with no upgrade path do not, so what they do gets replaced or retired. This is the Drupal website migration we are asked for most.
From Drupal 8 to a current Drupal version — A Drupal 8 migration or a Drupal 9 migration keeps your structure, your addresses and the way your team works. Where modules still have a future, it is the cheaper option by a distance.
From Drupal to WordPress — Content types become post types and categories become taxonomies. Connections between content need a deliberate equivalent, and listing pages get rebuilt rather than moved.
From Drupal to a headless setup — Your content translates well, because Drupal sites are already structured. What gets rebuilt is everything the theme did, and your editors need a workflow designed rather than copied.
    Months 2-3
    Migration plan
Your module list, with a decision on each — Every module, its support position, and a keep, replace or retire recommendation.
Your content structure, mapped to the new site — Content types, fields, categories and relationships matched across, with what your design depends on recorded alongside.
Your address list, ready to import — Every page address and redirect pulled out as data, with the ones a rule would generate differently marked.
    Ongoing
    Launch checks
What each test run found — Page counts by type, working links between content, images attached correctly and version history handled as you asked.
Every address, before launch and after — Every live address checked against the new site before go live, then weekly until all are confirmed.

Not sure whether to upgrade Drupal or leave it behind?

Send us your version number and module list. We will come back with a straight answer and a cost for each option. Drupal migration projects run from $2,500 to $75,000, and the lower end is small sites and startups. Where you land depends on the size of your content structure, how many modules have to be replaced rather than upgraded, and whether you are upgrading or changing platform.

    Frequently asked questions

    Common Questions

A Drupal service is professional help with a Drupal website. It usually means one of three things: building a new site on Drupal, looking after an existing one, or moving a site onto or off it. This page is the third, and what makes that move different is the structure underneath a Drupal site.
