Summary
A local bakery puts most of its effort into its homepage: the photos, the story, the opening hours. Then someone asks ChatGPT how long a sourdough starter keeps, and the answer cites a page on another baker's site titled exactly that, sitting inside its recipes folder. AI engines do not cite the bakery; they cite the page that answers the question, wherever it sits.
For businesses, that decides where AI visibility is won. A homepage introduces a company to people who already know its name. An AI engine is looking for a passage that answers a specific question, and that passage almost always lives deeper in a site. Many site owners also worry that pages buried deep in a site's structure are invisible to AI, and flatten their sites to compensate.
The numbers settle both points. Only 0.9% of the sources cited in AI answers are homepages, and 99.1% are inner pages. The average cited page sits 2.6 folders deep, and one citation in ten reaches five folders or more. Even Gemini, the engine most willing to cite a homepage, does so for 3.2% of its citations, about one in 30.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we asked 2,984 everyday questions, drawn from real search demand across 31 topics, to five AI engines from a US location: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. We collected every web page cited in the answers, 155,312 in all, and recorded for each one whether it was a homepage or an inner page and how deep it sits in its website, overall, by engine and by topic.
A citation is a source link an AI engine shows with its answer. A homepage is the front page of a website, such as example.com, including common versions like example.com/home or example.com/index.html. An inner page is any other page on the site. Depth is the number of folders in a page's web address after the domain: example.com is depth 0, example.com/page is depth 1, example.com/blog/page is depth 2, and example.com/a/b/page is depth 3. The median is the middle citation: half sit deeper, half shallower.
AI engines cite pages, not websites
AI engines answer questions, and a homepage rarely contains the answer to one. The pages they cite are the ones built around a specific subject: a service page with prices, a guide that walks through a task, a product page with specifications, a government page stating a rule. Only 0.9% of citations, fewer than one in a hundred, go to a homepage.
That makes each inner page its own entry point. A site with dozens of pages that each answer a clear question has dozens of chances to be cited; a site whose content lives on its homepage has almost none. AI visibility is measured page by page, not domain by domain.
Most AI citations sit two or more folders deep
Citations peak at depth 2, which holds 33.5% of them, and tail off gradually from there: 23.9% sit three folders deep, 12.8% four and 9.9% five or more. Only 0.9% are homepages, and 18.5% sit one level down, like example.com/page. The median citation sits 2 folders deep.

These are the pages that hold specific answers: an article inside a blog folder, a product inside a category, a help page inside a support section, a rule inside a government department's site. Picture a hardware retailer: the product page with the torque figures someone needs sits at example.com/tools/drills/cordless/model-x, and that is the page an AI engine cites, not the homepage or the category. Depth on its own does not keep a page out of AI answers.
Gemini cites the most homepages while ChatGPT digs deepest
All five engines cite inner pages the vast majority of the time, but they differ in how far into a site they go. Gemini is the most likely to cite a homepage, at 3.2% of its citations, followed by ChatGPT at 1.3% and Perplexity at 0.8%. Google's two AI products are the least likely, at 0.7% for AI Mode and 0.6% for AI Overviews, roughly one citation in 150.

| AI engine | Citations to a homepage | Average depth | Median depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 1.3% | 2.96 | 3 |
| Perplexity | 0.8% | 2.83 | 3 |
| Gemini | 3.2% | 2.47 | 2 |
| Google AI Mode | 0.7% | 2.45 | 2 |
| Google AI Overviews | 0.6% | 2.42 | 2 |
| All five engines | 0.9% | 2.6 | 2 |
ChatGPT's average citation sits 2.96 folders deep, about half a folder deeper than Google AI Overviews' 2.42, and Perplexity is close behind at 2.83. In practice, the typical ChatGPT or Perplexity citation looks like example.com/section/topic/page, while the typical Google AI citation looks like example.com/section/page. ChatGPT and Perplexity go further into a site's archive, support pages and reference material, where the most specific answers usually live.
Google's AI features draw on Google's search index, which ranks individual pages for individual queries, so their citations follow the same page-level logic as a Google results page. Gemini more often points a reader to a service as a whole, which is when a homepage becomes the right link.
The homepages AI cites are tools people use
The homepages that do get cited are mostly places where the homepage is the product. Google's homepage is cited 153 times, Amazon's 56, the federal student aid site's 28 and NOAA's weather service 28. HealthCare.gov, tax filing sites such as FreeTaxUSA and Intuit, and the flight search site Skyscanner follow. In each case the answer to "where do I do this" is the site itself.

By topic, food questions produce the highest homepage share, 5.2% of citations, followed by travel at 2.1%, taxes at 1.8%, and shopping and cars at 1.5% each. These are topics where people are often sent to a service: a delivery app, a booking site, a filing tool, a store. Answers about recipes and energy cite no homepages at all, and answers about fitness cite 0.03%, two homepages out of more than 6,000 citations.
What this means for business owners
Measure AI visibility page by page. The question is not whether AI cites your website but which of your pages it cites, and for which questions. Build pages around the specific questions your customers ask: each service with its price range, how-to guides, comparison pages and answers to common objections. Each is a separate chance to be cited, and each should answer its question in the first few lines so an AI engine can quote it.
Do not flatten your site for AI. Most citations sit two or more folders deep and one in ten sits five or more, so put the effort into making deep pages reachable instead: link to them from related pages, list them in your XML sitemap, and use plain navigation links that every crawler can follow. Then review your deepest valuable pages, such as detailed guides, product specifications, support articles and pricing pages, and check that each loads quickly and answers its question in the first lines.
If your site is mostly a homepage with thin service pages, AI engines have almost nothing to cite. Expand the inner pages first, link them clearly from your navigation, and keep each one focused on one topic. As an ai seo company, Suff Digital builds the inner pages AI engines cite and tracks which of them earn citations.
