    Summary

A shopper asks ChatGPT for the best office chair and gets a short list of well-reviewed models with a typical price of about $1,456. The same search on Google Shopping shows a top 10 whose typical price is about $205. Both answers are about office chairs; one of them costs seven times the other.

AI assistants now shape what shoppers consider before they visit a store, and the first prices a shopper sees become the reference for everything after. A brand whose products appear in ChatGPT's answers is compared against premium models; a brand that only shows up on Google Shopping is compared against value options.

ChatGPT recommends premium products. For the typical "best product" question, its picks cost 133% more than Google Shopping's top results, more than twice the price, and they are more expensive in 92.7% of questions.

    What we measured

On September 23, 2026 we took 41 "best product" questions, such as "best tablet" and "best office task chair", and put each one to ChatGPT and to Google Shopping on the same day. From ChatGPT we collected the prices on its product cards, the shopping tiles it shows with a product, a price and a store, asking each question twice. From Google Shopping we collected the prices of the top 10 listings.

For each question we took the median price on each side, the middle price when all the products are lined up from cheapest to most expensive, and calculated how much higher or lower ChatGPT's median was. The headline figure is the median of those 41 gaps, so a single extreme question cannot move it.

ChatGPT's picks cost more than twice as much

    133%
more: that is how much ChatGPT's recommended products cost than Google Shopping's top results for the typical question.

The gap is consistent. ChatGPT's picks are more expensive in 38 of the 41 questions, 92.7%. Across all questions, the typical ChatGPT median price is about $724 against about $254 for Google Shopping's top 10, and adding up every question's median price gives a total 130% higher on ChatGPT.

The two systems answer different questions. Google Shopping ranks listings that sell, so its top 10 is full of popular, affordable items and value brands. ChatGPT answers "what is the best", drawing on reviews and expert roundups that favor flagship and premium models. A shopper who starts on ChatGPT sees a higher price as normal before they ever compare.

Office chairs and tablets show the biggest gaps

Office chairs have the widest gaps. ChatGPT's picks for the best office chair have a median price of about $1,456 against $205 on Google Shopping, a 610% gap, and for the best office task chair $1,426 against $201, 608%. These are the high-end ergonomic chairs that dominate expert reviews, against the budget chairs that sell in volume.

Tablets and gaming chairs follow. ChatGPT's picks for the best tablet computers cost $974 against $220, and for the best tablet $749 against $220, both more than three times as much. Its gaming chair picks have a median price of $599 against about $175 to $180 on Google Shopping. In each case ChatGPT names the flagship model, while Google Shopping's top listings include cheaper brands and older models.

Mainstream electronics and skincare sit close to Google Shopping

The gap shrinks for products where the best-known models are also the best sellers. ChatGPT's picks for the best headphones cost 5.5% more than Google Shopping's top results, for the best laptop 15.6% more and for the best gaming headset 14% more. In these categories the models reviewers recommend are the same ones shoppers already buy.

Three questions go the other way. For face moisturizers, ChatGPT's picks cost 18% to 20% less than Google Shopping's top results, so for everyday skincare ChatGPT points shoppers to the cheaper option. A gaming monitor question also came out 6% cheaper on ChatGPT.

What this means for ecommerce brands

If you sell a premium product, ChatGPT's answers favor you. Make sure your product appears in the expert roundups, review sites and retailer listings that AI assistants draw on, with clear specifications, prices and reviews, because that is where "best" recommendations come from.

If you compete on price, ChatGPT is a harder place to be seen, and Google Shopping, where value products fill the top 10, is still your strongest channel. To get into AI answers, give reviewers and AI assistants a reason to call your product the best at its price: publish comparisons against premium rivals and collect reviews that mention value. Our ecommerce seo services track where your products appear in AI shopping answers and at what price.
