    Summary

Two plumbers work the same city. One has 8 Google reviews, the other 300. A homeowner asks ChatGPT for the best plumber in town. The first plumber almost never appears in the answer; the second has close to a one-in-four chance. Nothing else about their work needs to differ.

That matters because an AI assistant names a handful of businesses per answer to a "who should I call" question. Reviews are the clearest signal separating the businesses that get named from the ones that do not, and they are the signal a small business can change fastest.

ChatGPT recommends 1.9% of businesses with fewer than 10 Google reviews and 26.9% of businesses with 500 to 999. The median business it recommends has 211 reviews; the median one it passes over has 30. And 29.5% of local businesses on Google Maps sit below the 10-review line.

    What we measured

For 20 local services, from plumbers and dentists to gyms and accountants, in 79 US cities, we compared the top 100 Google Maps listings, collected through a licensed data provider on September 23, 2026, with the businesses ChatGPT and Gemini recommended when asked for the best in that service and city. That is 1,580 searches and 139,294 listings, and each business an assistant recommended was matched to its Google Maps listing.

We then grouped all the listings by their number of Google reviews and measured the share in each group that ChatGPT or Gemini recommended. That share is the pick rate: a pick rate of 26.9% means ChatGPT named 26.9% of the businesses in that group. The median is the middle business: half have more reviews, half fewer.

Under 10 reviews, AI looks elsewhere

    1.9%
of local businesses with fewer than 10 Google reviews get recommended by ChatGPT.

That compares with 26.9% for businesses with 500 to 999 reviews, a 14-fold difference. Businesses with no reviews at all were picked 1.1% of the time, and those with 1 to 9 reviews 2.3%. Below 10 reviews, a business is close to invisible in ChatGPT's local answers.

The medians tell the same story. The typical business ChatGPT recommended had 211 Google reviews; the typical business it passed over had 30. ChatGPT builds its local answers from what it can find about a business online, and reviews are the most visible proof that real customers use it. A business with a handful of reviews gives it little to work with.

Every step up in reviews raises the odds

    ChatGPT's pick rate rises at every step: 4.7% at 10 to 24 reviews, 7.1% at 25 to 49, 10.8% at 50 to 99, 17.5% at 100 to 249 and 23.4% at 250 to 499. It peaks at 26.9% for 500 to 999 reviews and eases to 22.8% above 1,000.

Gemini names fewer businesses per answer, so its rates are lower, and they keep climbing all the way up: 0.2% for businesses with no reviews, 2.6% at 50 to 99 and 7.7% at 1,000 or more. For both assistants, the biggest gains come early. Going from under 10 reviews to 100 to 249 raises ChatGPT's pick rate from 1.9% to 17.5%.

A third of local businesses sit below the line

29.5% of local businesses on Google Maps have fewer than 10 Google reviews. Those businesses make up 5.4% of ChatGPT's recommendations. Close to one local business in three is competing for AI visibility with almost no chance of being named.

For those businesses, the fix is within reach. Moving from a handful of reviews to a few dozen takes consistent asking, not years of trading, and each step up the table raises the odds of being named. It is the cheapest and fastest AI visibility gain a small local business can make.

What this means for small local businesses

Treat 10 Google reviews as the floor and 100 as the real target. Ask every satisfied customer for a review, by text or email with a direct link, straight after the job. Reply to the reviews you get, so new customers see that someone is listening.

Reviews are not the only factor: even the best-reviewed businesses are picked in about one answer in four. A complete Google Business Profile, a website that names your services and city, and mentions on local directories all help. But reviews are the one signal you can move fastest.

Suff Digital's local seo packages include review programs that build a steady stream of Google reviews.
