Summary
A flight is cancelled, a plane is diverted or a pilot strike is announced, and within hours the story is on news sites around the world, each one naming the airline. The same airline also appears on thousands of travel blogs, booking pages and route guides that describe its lounges, fares and new destinations in upbeat terms.
For airline marketing and PR teams, those two streams add up to the brand's online reputation, and they pull in opposite directions. What travelers, journalists and AI answers read about an airline depends on which stream dominates, and news is where the damage concentrates.
Across 30 airline brands, 38.1% of recent mentions are negative and 42.4% positive. On news pages, though, 54% of airline mentions are negative, against 32% everywhere else. That 22-point gap is the widest of the eight industries in this series.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we collected the 1,000 most recent online mentions of each of 30 well-known airline brands, 29,992 mentions in all, from news sites, blogs, online stores and other pages. Each mention is scored automatically by a sentiment model for positive, negative and neutral tone, based on the text around the brand name, and web mentions count every page that contains the exact brand name. We also counted every web page that mentions each airline to measure its total coverage.
A mention is negative when its negative score is the highest of the three, and strongly negative when its negative score is above 0.5 on a scale of 0 to 1. Share of coverage is an airline's web mentions divided by the combined mentions of the 29 airlines ranked; Emirates is not ranked by coverage because its name is shared with the country. The eight industries compared are airlines, banks, telecom, insurance, retail, streaming, fast food and hotels.
38.1% of airline brand mentions are negative
Almost four in ten recent mentions of the 30 airline brands are scored negative: 38.1% are mainly negative and 23% strongly negative, meaning nearly one airline mention in four sits next to clearly critical language. Positive mentions still slightly lead, at 42.4%, because airlines are also written about constantly in travel guides, route announcements and deal roundups.
That mix reflects what flying is: a product people love when it works and write about angrily when it does not. Delays, lost bags and refunds generate complaints, while new routes, cabins and loyalty perks generate praise, often about the same airline in the same week.
News coverage of airlines is far harsher than the rest of the web
News pages carry 26.5% of all airline mentions, and 54% of those mentions are negative, against 32% on blogs, stores and other page types.

The gap is the widest of the eight industries in this series, well ahead of retail and fast food. Airline news is dominated by disruption: cancellations, strikes, safety incidents and customer disputes are all reported, while an on-time flight is not news. For an airline, that means the pages journalists and AI answers draw on most are also the most negative.
Air Canada and Air France get the most coverage
Air Canada is mentioned on 12.4 million web pages, 16% of the total for the 29 airlines ranked, just ahead of Air France at 12 million. American Airlines (5.8 million) and United Airlines (5.8 million) follow, with Ryanair, Lufthansa, Iberia, British Airways, easyJet and KLM completing the top ten.

Coverage and tone are separate things. Air Canada leads on volume with 34.7% of recent mentions negative, below the airline average, and Air France, second on volume, has one of the mildest tones of any airline.
Air France and JetBlue draw the mildest coverage
Air France and JetBlue have the least negative coverage of the 30 airlines, with 14.7% of recent mentions negative each, well under half the 38.1% airline average. Spirit Airlines (20.4%), Iberia (25.8%) and Etihad Airways (27.3%) complete the five mildest. Scores are automated and cover each brand's 1,000 most recent mentions.

At the other end, five airlines have more than half of their recent mentions negative, and the most negatively covered has 80.5%. The spread between 14.7% and 80.5% shows how much an airline's recent news cycle, rather than the industry, sets its tone.
What this means for airline marketing and PR teams
Plan for news to be the harshest channel. With 54% of news mentions negative, an airline cannot rely on news coverage to balance itself; it needs a steady pipeline of positive, data-backed stories, such as on-time records, route launches, customer programs and sustainability milestones, that give reporters something other than disruption to write about.
Prepare for disruption before it happens. Most negative airline news follows an event: a storm, a strike, an outage. A ready statement, a live status page and a spokesperson who answers quickly limit how long the negative story runs and how many outlets repeat it.
