Summary
A customer who already knows your company types its name into the search bar. That is the warmest lead a business can get: the person has chosen you and wants your website. On Bing, when that search shows ads, the top of the page is sold to someone else every time.
It matters because the first thing on the page is what many people click. An ad from a reseller, a marketplace or a rival can take the visit, the sale or the lead, and the business that earned the search pays for it in lost customers without ever seeing the ad.
Every one of the 96 brand searches that showed ads carried at least one ad from another company. On 86 of the 96, the brand did not advertise at all, so the only paid listings above its name belonged to others.
What we measured
In September 2026 we took 2,000 websites that rank often in Google, turned each domain into its brand name and searched that name on Bing desktop in the US. 1,747 searches returned results, and 96 of those showed ads. For each ad we compared the advertiser's website with the brand's own website.
A brand search is a search for a company's own name, such as the name of a retailer or an insurer. An ad counts as another company's ad when it points to any website other than the brand's: a direct competitor, a reseller, an affiliate that earns a commission on sales, or a marketplace. A brand bids on its own name when one of the ads points to its own website.
Every brand search with ads had an outside advertiser
The result is absolute. Not one brand search with ads was limited to the brand's own ad. Across all 1,747 brand searches, that puts another company's ad on at least 5.5% of them, which for a business searched thousands of times a month is a steady stream of customers shown someone else first.
The outside advertisers include rivals, resellers and marketplaces. Each one can pull the buyer onto a different checkout, a different quote form or a comparison page that lists the brand next to its competitors.

Most brands do not bid on their own name
Brands advertised on their own name on 10 of the 96 searches, 10%. On nine in ten brand searches that showed ads, the company people were looking for had left the paid space to others.
Many businesses assume they do not need to pay for searches they already rank first for. But the ad space sits above the first organic result, and when the brand is absent, the first listing a searcher sees is someone else's offer.
Marketplaces and lead sites are the usual outside bidders
The two most frequent outside advertisers each appeared on the brand searches of 7 different companies, and a large online marketplace appeared on 4.
The outside bidders fall into three groups: big marketplaces that sell many brands' products, lead-generation and comparison sites that collect a searcher's details and pass them on, and companies in the same category as the brand, such as one insurer advertising on another's name. Each group wants the same thing: the customer who was ready to buy from you.
What this means for brand owners
Search your own brand name on Google and Bing every month and note who advertises. If other companies show up, a brand campaign is usually cheap insurance: your ad is the most relevant possible answer to that search, so it tends to earn a high quality rating and a low price per click.
If a reseller or affiliate is bidding on your name, check your agreements. Many affiliate and reseller programs ban bidding on the brand's name, and you can enforce that. If a competitor is bidding, make sure your own ad and your top listing answer the searcher faster than theirs.
Bing is easy to overlook because it is smaller, which is exactly why brand searches there go unguarded. A bing ads agency such as Suff Digital sets up brand campaigns and monthly brand-search checks on both Microsoft Ads and Google Ads.
