A category or listing page holds Google's top organic spot for about 7 in 10 US product searches, while a single product page holds it for about 6%. For broad product searches, Google sends shoppers to pages that offer a choice, and Reddit takes more #1 spots than any retailer except Amazon.

Summary
An online store spends months perfecting its product pages: better photos, longer descriptions, detailed specifications. Then it checks Google for its most important searches, "running shoes for women", "cordless vacuum", "dog bed", and finds that the pages at the top are not product pages at all. They are category pages, search results pages and best-of lists that show many products at once.
That matters because it decides where a store's SEO effort pays off. A search like "cordless vacuum" is a request for options, and Google answers it with a page that offers them. A store that puts all its work into product pages is building the wrong page for most of the searches it wants to win.
The data is lopsided. A category or listing page ranks #1 for about 7 in 10 product searches, and a single product page for about 6%. Editorial, review, forum and video pages take almost one in five #1 spots, and Reddit alone holds the top position on more product searches than any retailer except Amazon.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we analyzed Google's US desktop results for 3,995 product searches on which Google showed a Popular Products block, a strong sign the searcher wants to buy. We recorded the top 10 organic results for each, 32,794 page-one results in all, and classed each result by page type.
We used four page types. A product page presents one specific item, with its own price and buy button. A store homepage is a store's front page. Editorial, review, forum or video pages come from publishers, review sites, Reddit, YouTube and similar sites, or are guides and best-of articles. Every other store page is a category or listing page: a collection, category, brand line or store search results page that lists several products. Organic results are the ranked listings, not the ads or shopping boxes around them.
Seven in ten #1 results are category pages
Category and listing pages hold the top spot on about seven in ten product searches. Editorial, review, forum and video pages hold almost one in five, and store homepages and single product pages each hold well under one in ten.
Google reads a broad product search as a shopper who has not decided yet. A category page lets that shopper compare styles, prices and brands in one place, so it matches the search better than any single product. A product page can be excellent and still be the wrong answer to "running shoes for women", because it offers one shoe.
Product pages rarely rank anywhere on page one
The pattern holds across the whole first page. Of all 32,794 page-one results, category and listing pages make up more than half and product pages under 5%. On a typical product search, fewer than one of the ten organic results is a product page.
Product pages still matter. They win exact searches for a specific model, they carry the details that convert a visitor into a buyer, and they feed category pages through internal links. But for the broad searches that bring most new shoppers, the category page is the asset that competes.
Reddit is the second most common #1 site
Amazon held #1 on 326 product searches, mostly with its search results and Best Sellers pages. Reddit came second with 193, ahead of every other retailer. Best Buy (99), IKEA (63) and Nintendo (49) followed, with the review site RTINGS at 46.

Reddit's wins are part of the #1 spots taken by editorial, forum and video pages. For many product searches, Google puts a discussion between real users ahead of every store.
Product pages win more often in beauty
The share of #1 spots held by product pages varies by category. Beauty has the highest rate at 12%, followed by fitness at 9.2% and pets at 7.2%. Apparel is lowest at 0.9%. Where product pages win, they often come from brand sites, such as Bissell for vacuums and Royal Canin for pet food.

| Category | Product searches | Product page at #1 |
|---|---|---|
| Beauty | 629 | 12% |
| Fitness | 284 | 9.2% |
| Pets | 335 | 7.2% |
| Kids | 262 | 6.1% |
| Home | 498 | 6% |
| Kitchen | 327 | 4% |
| Outdoor | 326 | 3.1% |
| Electronics | 423 | 2.8% |
| Apparel | 544 | 0.9% |
Apparel is the clearest case for collections: across 544 apparel searches, a product page almost never ranks first. In beauty, fitness and pets, a strong product page on a brand site has a realistic chance at the top spot, so it deserves more of the effort there.
What this means for online store owners
Build your category pages first. They win most product searches. Give each one a heading that matches how people search, useful filters, a short introduction that helps shoppers choose, and enough products to be a real selection. Treat each important category page as a landing page, not a list.
Treat product pages as support. They win exact model searches and convert the shoppers your category pages bring in, so keep them complete and link them to their categories. For broad terms, a product page rarely beats a good category page.
Plan for discussion results too: where Reddit or a review site holds #1, a useful buying guide or a presence in those discussions may do more than another product page. An ecommerce seo services plan starts by mapping which page type wins each of your target searches.
