    Summary

Someone approaching retirement decides it is time to get professional help with their savings. They ask a friend, then search for a financial advisor near them and read the websites of the firms Google shows, closely, because this is a decision about their life savings.

Search engines rely on a few basic signals to understand what a page is about: a page title, a short description, a main heading, a secure connection and schema markup, code that states in machine-readable terms that this is a financial advisory firm, what services it offers, where it is and how to reach it. They cost almost nothing to add and help Google's results and its AI answers describe the firm correctly.

Most advisory firms skip the most specific one. 75.3% of financial advisor websites don't use FinancialService schema. And 44.8% miss at least one of the four basics on their homepage, the fifth highest rate of 15 industries, most often the meta description, the summary that shows under the link in Google.

    What we measured

In September 2026 we took 288 financial advisor websites listed on US Google Business Profiles and checked each homepage for four basics: a title tag, the page name shown as the blue link in search results; a meta description, the summary Google can show under that link; at least one H1 heading, the main headline on the page; and HTTPS, the secure connection shown by the padlock in a browser. A site fails the basic check if its homepage misses any of the four.

We also recorded whether the homepage title was too long to show in full on Google, whether any page on the site could not be added to Google's index, whether the site had an XML sitemap, the file that lists a site's pages for search engines, and which schema types each site used. Schema markup is code that states in machine-readable terms what a business is, where it is and what it does. We ran the same checks on websites in 15 industries, from accounting to HVAC, so each financial advisor figure can be compared with the 15-industry average.

Three in four financial advisor websites never tell Google what they do

    75.3%
of financial advisor websites don't use FinancialService schema.

Schema.org, the shared vocabulary Google and other search engines read, has a type made for financial firms: FinancialService. It lets a firm state its name, services, address, phone number and hours in a form search engines can use directly. 24.7% of financial advisor websites use it, about one in four.

Advisors do add schema of some kind more often than most industries: 24.2% of financial advisor websites have none, below the 32.9% average across 15 industries. The most common types are WebSite (on 43% of financial advisor websites), PostalAddress (36%), WebPage (31%) and BreadcrumbList (27%). 34.9% use any local business type, the family of schema types that marks a site as a business with a location.

    44.8%
of financial advisor websites miss at least one basic SEO element on their homepage.

That is the fifth highest rate of 15 industries, well above the 37.9% average. Missing page titles (1.4%) and sites without HTTPS (1%) are rare.

WordPress runs 30.6% of financial advisor websites, and advisor sites on WordPress fail the basic checks 36.4% of the time, below the 44.8% for financial advisors overall. Some advisory firms run their websites on compliance-approved platforms, where titles, descriptions and headings come from the provider's templates.

What this means for financial advisors

Add a meta description and one clear H1 to your homepage and to each service page, such as retirement planning, wealth management and tax planning. These are the two gaps that push financial advisor websites above the average, and both take minutes to fix. Then add FinancialService schema with your firm name, services, address, phone number and hours.

If your site runs on a compliance-approved platform, ask the provider which SEO fields you can edit, and fill in every one of them. A prospect comparing advisors reads your listing in Google before your website, so the title and description are the first impression you make. Our financial services seo work starts with exactly these checks.
