Summary
An SEO newsletter announces that Google now features forum threads in a box of their own, and marketers rush to post on Reddit and Quora to get into it. A month later, a business owner searches her twenty most important keywords and finds the box on none of them. The threads she does see are sitting in ordinary results, ranked like any other page.
Google's Discussions and forums box is a panel that shows threads from community websites such as Reddit, Quora and specialist forums. Knowing how often it really appears tells a business whether it is worth a strategy of its own, or whether forum content matters mainly because it competes for the regular spots on page one.
The box is rare. Google shows it on 3.4% of desktop searches and 4.8% of mobile searches. Its broader cousin, Perspectives, appears on 9.1%, and either feature on 12.1%. Forum content matters far more through ordinary rankings: Reddit ranks in the top 10 on 20.5% of the same searches.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we checked 20,000 desktop and 10,000 mobile Google results pages for US keywords across 24 industries and recorded every feature on page one. A page counts if it shows the Discussions and forums box. We counted Google's Perspectives feature separately; it mixes forum threads with social media and creator posts, such as short videos and blog posts from individuals.
We split the results by device, industry, monthly search volume, search intent (whether the person wants to compare options, learn something or reach a specific website) and by whether the same page showed an AI Overview, the AI-written summary Google places above the ordinary results.
The forums box is rare, forum content is not
The box appears on 676 of 20,000 desktop searches, about one in 30, and on 4.8% of mobile searches. It gets a lot of attention in SEO circles, but for most businesses it simply does not appear on the searches that matter to them.
Forum threads reach page one another way. On the same searches, a Reddit thread ranks in Google's ordinary top 10 results 20.5% of the time, six times as often as the forums box appears. Forum content mostly competes for the regular spots on page one, the same spots businesses compete for, rather than sitting in a box of its own.
Perspectives shows up almost three times as often
Perspectives is the bigger of Google's two community features, appearing on 9.1% of desktop searches. It favors different searches from the forums box: 13.4% of informational searches, where people want to learn something, but 4.6% of commercial searches. The forums box runs the other way, appearing most on commercial searches (4.1%) and least on navigational ones (1.3%).

| Desktop search group | Discussions and forums | Perspectives |
|---|---|---|
| All searches | 3.4% | 9.1% |
| With AI Overview | 5% | 10.1% |
| Without AI Overview | 1.2% | 7.8% |
| Under 10,000 monthly searches | 4% | 9.1% |
| 10,000 to 100,000 monthly searches | 2.7% | 8.8% |
| 100,000+ monthly searches | 1.3% | 13.5% |
| Commercial intent | 4.1% | 4.6% |
| Informational intent | 2.1% | 13.4% |
| Navigational intent | 1.3% | 11.4% |
Search volume splits them too. Perspectives rises on the biggest keywords, reaching 13.5% of searches with 100,000 or more a month. The forums box falls, from 4% of keywords searched under 10,000 times a month to 1.3% above 100,000. Both appear more often alongside an AI Overview: the forums box on 5% of those searches against 1.2% without one.
Pest control and software searches see the most forum threads
By industry, pest control leads at 12% of desktop searches, followed by software (7.7%), HVAC (7.1%) and plastic surgery (6.8%). Software jumps to 17% on mobile. These are the same industries where Reddit ranks most often in ordinary results: purchases where buyers look for people who have faced the same problem.

At the bottom, accounting (0.3%), moving companies (0.5%), senior care and real estate (both 0.6%) almost never show the box. A pest control company is 40 times more likely than an accounting firm to find forum threads boxed on its main searches.
What this means for businesses
Do not build a strategy around winning the Discussions and forums box; it appears on too few searches. If you work in an industry where it does appear, such as pest control, software or HVAC, look at which threads Google picks for your keywords and what questions they answer.
The bigger opportunity is the forum content that ranks in ordinary results. Make sure your own website answers the questions people raise in those threads, clearly and near the top of the page, and take part in the discussions where your customers already are, as a person rather than an advertiser.
A good seo consultant will check which of these features actually appear on your keywords before you spend time on any of them.
