Summary
A cleaning company decides it needs more Google reviews and texts every past customer in one week. Twelve reviews arrive that month. Over the next year, two more trickle in. Its profile now shows a strong rating, but anyone who scrolls sees that almost everything happened in one month, long ago.
For a small business, the timing of reviews matters as much as the count. A steady flow keeps the profile looking current, which customers notice when they check how recent the reviews are. A single push lifts the numbers once, then leaves the profile to go stale.
26.9% of local businesses with 6 to 20 Google reviews got at least a third of all their reviews in a single month, and 12.3% got half or more. Bursts usually come from review drives, openings or seasonal peaks, and they show in ratings: businesses with a burst average 4.71 stars, against 4.39 for the rest.
What we measured
We took 2,273 US local businesses with 6 to 20 lifetime Google reviews, across 18 categories from cleaning services and roofers to dentists and lawyers, and on September 23, 2026 analysed their full Google review history: every review, its date and its star rating. For each business we counted how many reviews arrived in each calendar month.
A business has a review burst when its busiest month holds at least a third of all its reviews. A business with steady reviews is one with no such month. The typical business in this group has 11 lifetime reviews spread over 8 different months. We compare the ratings and the mix of star levels of businesses with and without a burst, and the burst rate by category.
One in four small businesses gets reviews in a burst
For 12.3%, a single month holds half or more of their entire review history. Some of that is normal business: a grand opening brings a wave of first customers, a seasonal trade has one busy month a year, and an owner who reads that reviews matter asks everyone at once.
The trouble with a burst is what comes after it. Customers look at how recent the reviews are, and a business whose reviews stopped months ago looks less active than one reviewed last week, whatever the total count. For a business with 11 reviews, a burst of four or five leaves long stretches with nothing new.
Businesses with review bursts have higher ratings
Businesses with a review burst average 4.71 stars on Google, against 4.39 for businesses whose reviews arrive steadily. 63.5% of them are rated 4.9 or higher, almost twice the 32.1% of steady businesses.

| Measure | Businesses with a burst | Businesses with steady reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Average Google rating | 4.71 | 4.39 |
| Rated 4.9 or higher | 63.5% | 32.1% |
| Share of reviews that are 5 stars | 91.4% | 80.7% |
The reason is who gets asked. A review drive reaches the customers a business chooses to contact, usually the happy ones, so 91.4% of their reviews are five stars, against 80.7% for businesses reviewed steadily. Reviews that arrive on their own include customers with mixed experiences. The higher rating is real, but a profile whose five-star reviews all share one month is less convincing to a reader who checks the dates than the same rating built over a year.
Cleaning services and roofers get reviews in bursts most
56.1% of cleaning services with 6 to 20 reviews got a third of them in one month, followed by restaurants at 48.5% and roofers at 41.6%. These are businesses with seasonal demand or large one-off projects, where an owner is likely to run a single push for reviews after a busy season.

Medical and legal services have the steadiest review histories: veterinarians at 14.5%, lawyers at 13.6% and dentists at 12.4%. Their customers come back regularly or arrive one at a time throughout the year, so reviews arrive the same way.
What this means for local business owners
Asking for reviews is good practice. Asking everyone at once and then stopping creates a spike that leaves your profile stale afterwards. Build the request into every job instead, with a short text or email and a direct review link sent when the work is done, so reviews arrive at the same pace as your customers.
If you need to catch up, spread the effort over several weeks and ask every customer, including those whose experience was mixed. Their reviews make your rating more believable, and your replies to them show how you handle problems. Never offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews, which breaks Google's policies.
Then keep going after the push ends: a business with a review from last week looks more active than one with twice as many reviews from last year. Our local seo packages set up steady review request systems that keep a Google Business Profile current.
