The median page ranking first on Google has 759 words, fewer than any position from 2 to 9 and below the 921-word median across the whole top 10. Longer pages do not win the top spot; pages that answer the search do.
Analysis of 35,803 pages ranking in Google's top 10 for 10,000 keywords · Google US search results, September 2026

- 5.Pages ranking for commercial keywords, where people compare options, are the longest in Google's top 10, averaging 1,589 words against 1,216 for navigational keywords.
Summary
A marketing manager is told that Google rewards long content, so every new page on the company website gets stretched to 3,000 words. The pages get longer, readers leave sooner, and the rankings do not move. Meanwhile the competitor in first place has a tight page of a few hundred words that answers the question in the first paragraph.
Word count is one of the most repeated rules in SEO, and one of the most expensive to follow blindly: every extra thousand words costs writing time and asks more of the reader. Knowing how long the pages that actually rank are, and how that changes by position and topic, tells a business how much to write for each page.
The answer is less than most people think. The median page in Google's top 10 has 921 words, and the median first result has 759 words, shorter than the pages below it. Length depends far more on the topic: a personal injury law page runs more than six times as long as a real estate page.
What we measured
On September 23 and 24, 2026 we searched 10,000 US keywords on Google (desktop) and visited every unique page in the top 10 organic results, the ordinary listings below the ads, 35,803 pages in all. For each page we counted the visible words.
We then calculated the average and median length by ranking position, by search intent and by keyword category. The average adds up all words and divides by the number of pages, so a few very long pages raise it. The median is the middle page: half are longer, half shorter, which makes it the better guide to a typical page. Search intent is what the person searching wants: to compare options (commercial), learn something (informational), buy or hire (transactional) or reach a specific website (navigational).
The top result is shorter than the rest
The first result averages 1,388 words, against 1,500 to 1,567 for positions 2 to 8. The median tells the same story more sharply: 759 words at first place against 886 to 996 for positions 2 to 9. If longer pages ranked higher, first place would hold the longest pages. It holds some of the shortest.

Part of the reason is homepages. 28.9% of first-place results are a website's homepage, against 16.3% at second place and about 9% to 10% at positions 6 to 10. When someone searches for a brand or a specific business, Google puts its homepage first, and homepages are shorter than guides. The lesson holds either way: adding words is not a path to first place.
The typical page on page one is about 900 words
The average page in Google's top 10 has 1,507 words, but that figure is pulled up by a minority of very long pages: 11.5% of top 10 pages have 3,000 words or more. The median, 921 words, is the better picture of a typical ranking page.
Short pages rank too. 30.1% of pages in Google's top 10 have fewer than 500 words, nearly a third of page one. These are often local service pages, product pages and homepages, where a searcher wants a clear answer, a price or a phone number rather than a long read.
The topic sets the length, not a rule
Search intent shifts length a little. Pages ranking for commercial keywords, where people compare options, are the longest, averaging 1,589 words with a median of 1,037. Navigational keywords, where people look for a specific website, have the shortest pages, averaging 1,216 words with a median of 622.

The industry shifts it much more. Real estate results have a median of 224 words, because listing and search pages carry photos and figures rather than text. Personal injury law results have a median of 1,451 words, more than six times as long, because legal questions need explanation. Software, mortgage, pest control, banking and IT services results all have medians above 1,150 words.
What this means for businesses
Stop writing to a word count. Search your keyword, open the top five results and note their length and format, then match what the search needs. For a real estate or local service search, a clear 500-word page can beat a 3,000-word guide. For a legal or financial question, the top pages run long because the topic demands it.
Use length as a check, not a goal. If every top result runs past 1,000 words and your page has 300, you are probably missing subtopics the searcher expects. If yours is three times longer than all of them, cut what the searcher does not need and move the answer to the top.
Getting the length, structure and answer right for each keyword is the core of good on page seo services, and it starts with the pages already ranking.
