0.10% of online stores, about one in a thousand, run a recognizable headless storefront, and the total grew 2.1% in a year. Nearly all the growth belongs to Shopify's own framework, Hydrogen, which grew 69.6% and now runs half of all headless stores.

Analysis of 3,911,812 ecommerce homepages · the public HTTP Archive crawl, October 2024 to September 2026

    2. 2.Headless storefronts grew 2.1% in a year, from 4,003 to 4,086 online stores.
    3. 3.Shopify Hydrogen storefronts grew 69.6% in a year, from 1,183 to 2,006 online stores, while every other tracked headless framework shrank.

    Summary

An ecommerce manager sits through an agency pitch for a headless rebuild: a custom front end, faster pages, full design freedom. It sounds like where every serious store is heading. Across the web, though, the stores that have actually made that move are few, and most of the recent ones went with the same option.

A headless store splits the shop into two parts: the ecommerce system that holds products, orders and checkout, and a separate, custom-built front end that shoppers see. It can deliver faster pages and more design control, but it means building and maintaining a second codebase. How many stores run it tells a merchant whether it is the new standard or still a specialist choice.

It is still a specialist choice. 0.10% of online stores run a recognizable headless storefront, and the total grew 2.1% in a year. Shopify's Hydrogen accounts for all of the net growth; the other frameworks are losing share to it.

    What we measured

The HTTP Archive is a public project that loads millions of homepages each month and records the technologies they use. We counted homepages running one of eight headless storefront frameworks in each monthly crawl from October 2024 to September 2026, compared September 2025 with September 2026 for the one-year change, and divided the September 2026 total by the 3,911,812 homepages running any ecommerce technology.

A headless storefront framework is ready-made software for building the shopper-facing part of a headless store, such as Shopify's Hydrogen, Shogun Frontend, PWA Studio (built for Magento) or Vue Storefront. A store counts as headless here when its homepage runs one of the eight frameworks tracked.

One online store in a thousand runs a headless storefront

    0.10%
of online stores run a recognizable headless storefront.

That is 4,086 of 3,911,812 homepages running ecommerce technology. For all the attention headless gets in platform marketing and agency pitches, the other 99.9% of stores run their shop front on the platform's own theme or templates.

The total is barely moving. Headless storefronts grew 2.1% in a year, from 4,003 to 4,086. Hydrogen gained 823 stores in that time, and declines in the other frameworks cancelled out almost all of it.

Shopify Hydrogen is the only headless framework growing

    69.6%
growth in one year took Shopify Hydrogen from 1,183 to 2,006 online stores.

Hydrogen has nearly tripled in two years, from 724 stores in October 2024 to 2,006 in September 2026, and passed Shogun Frontend in March 2026 to become the most common headless storefront. It is Shopify's own framework, so a Shopify merchant can go headless without leaving the platform or stitching together tools from different companies.

The headless market is consolidating around Hydrogen

Hydrogen now runs 49% of all detected headless storefronts, up from 30% a year earlier. Every other tracked framework lost stores over the year: Shogun Frontend fell 26.6%, Vue Storefront 30.2% and PWA Studio 21%. Over two years Shogun Frontend went from 1,997 stores to 1,150 and Vue Storefront from 657 to 356.

The shift follows the wider move of stores toward Shopify, where Hydrogen is the native option, and away from platforms such as Magento, which PWA Studio was built for. For anyone choosing a framework, the concentration matters: apps, documentation and developers follow the option most stores use.

What this means for ecommerce teams

Headless is still a niche choice. It can deliver faster pages and more design freedom, but it adds a second codebase to host and maintain, and many standard apps and plugins stop working. For most small and mid-size stores, a well-built theme on a hosted platform is cheaper to run and easier to keep fast.

If you are considering headless on Shopify, Hydrogen is where the momentum is. Before committing, compare the cost of building and running the custom front end against what a faster theme would deliver. A headless cms agency can weigh that trade-off with your own numbers and plan the move so your search rankings come through intact.
