Summary
The air conditioning quits on the hottest afternoon of the summer. The homeowner searches for AC repair nearby, looks at the companies on Google's map and first page, and calls the one that looks most trustworthy. HVAC demand spikes with the weather, and in those spikes the company that shows up clearly in local search gets the call.
Search engines rely on a few basic signals to understand what a page is about: a page title, a short description, a main heading, a secure connection and schema markup, code that states in machine-readable terms that this is an HVAC company, which area it serves, when it is open and what number to call. They cost almost nothing to add and help Google's results and its AI answers describe the company correctly.
HVAC companies get the first four right more often than any other industry, and skip the most specific one. 85.3% of HVAC company websites don't use HVACBusiness schema. 26% miss one of the four basics on their homepage, the lowest rate of 15 industries, and the most common problem is a title too long to show in full.
What we measured
In September 2026 we took 809 HVAC company websites listed on US Google Business Profiles and checked each homepage for four basics: a title tag, the page name shown as the blue link in search results; a meta description, the summary Google can show under that link; at least one H1 heading, the main headline on the page; and HTTPS, the secure connection shown by the padlock in a browser. A site fails the basic check if its homepage misses any of the four.
We also recorded whether the homepage title was too long to show in full on Google, whether any page on the site could not be added to Google's index, whether the site had an XML sitemap, the file that lists a site's pages for search engines, and which schema types each site used. Schema markup is code that states in machine-readable terms what a business is, where it is and what it does. We ran the same checks on websites in 15 industries, from accounting to HVAC, so each HVAC figure can be compared with the 15-industry average.
Most HVAC websites never tell Google they are an HVAC company
Schema.org, the shared vocabulary Google and other search engines read, has a type made for heating and cooling companies: HVACBusiness. It lets a company state its name, service area, phone number and hours in a form search engines can use directly. Only 14.7% of HVAC company websites use it. 23.9% have no schema markup at all, below the 32.9% average across 15 industries, so most HVAC companies that add schema stop at the generic types.
The schema HVAC websites do use is mostly what a website builder or SEO plugin adds automatically. The most common types are WebSite (on 54% of HVAC company websites), PostalAddress (37%), WebPage (34%) and SearchAction (33%). 31.9% of HVAC company websites use any local business type, the family of schema types that marks a site as a business with a location, which leaves most without the one type made for their trade.
HVAC websites get the basics right more than any other industry
That is the lowest rate of the 15 industries and well below the 37.9% average. HVAC homepages are less likely than average to lack a meta description (16.9% against 23%) or an H1 heading (16.7% against 24.5%), and fewer HVAC websites lack an XML sitemap (13.2% against 18.3%). Missing page titles (2.5%) and sites without HTTPS (1.4%) are rare.

The one area where HVAC websites trail the average is title length. 23.9% of HVAC company homepages have a title too long to show in full in Google's results, against 20.1% across 15 industries, for example when a company lists heating, cooling, every brand it services and every town it covers in one title. 12.4% have at least one page that Google cannot add to its index.
HVAC ranks first of 15 industries on the basics
Across the 15 industries, the share of websites failing at least one basic check runs from 26% for HVAC companies to 53.1% for accounting firms. HVAC companies do best, ahead of roofing (28.1%), dental (30.2%) and plumbing (30.5%).

WordPress runs 46.1% of HVAC company websites, and HVAC sites on WordPress fail the basic checks 23.1% of the time, below the 26% for HVAC websites overall. WordPress SEO plugins fill in titles, descriptions and sitemaps by default, which likely helps.
What this means for HVAC companies
Add HVACBusiness schema to your homepage and service area pages with your company name, phone number, hours and the towns you serve. It is the biggest gap on HVAC websites and takes an hour to fix, and it helps Google and AI answers describe your company correctly when a homeowner searches for help nearby.
Then shorten your titles. Keep each under about 60 characters and lead with the service and city ("AC Repair in Tampa"), and give each service page, such as AC repair, furnace repair and installation, its own title, meta description and H1. Keep a tap-to-call phone number on every page: 82.6% of HVAC company websites already have one, so a site without it stands out. Our seo for hvac companies work starts with exactly these checks.
