Summary
Search Google Maps for "roofer" in almost any US city and read the three names under the map: something Roofing, something Roofing and Restoration, a Roofing Company. The businesses that say exactly what they do fill the top of the list.
A business name is one of the few things Google can match word for word against a search. Google's rules say the name on a listing must be the business's real-world name, but when that real name includes the service, the listing appears to benefit. That makes the name a local ranking factor most owners never think about.
79.4% of map pack businesses have the searched service in their name, against 67.4% of businesses ranked 11 to 20, and the share drops almost every step down Google Maps, from 81.2% at number one to 64.4% at number twenty. Names that combine the service and the city are rarer, but they appear almost twice as often in the map pack as further down.
What we measured
On September 23, 2026 we ran 3,160 Google Maps searches for local services, such as plumber, roofer and personal injury lawyer, in 79 US cities, each with and without "near me". For 19 services we took the names of every business ranked 1 to 20, including 8,995 businesses in the map pack.
The map pack is the group of three businesses Google shows with a map at the top of local search results. A name contains the service when it includes the searched service word or a close variant, such as "Plumbing" for a plumber search or "Dental" for a dentist search. A name contains the city when it includes the name of the city searched. We compare the map pack with businesses ranked 4 to 10 and 11 to 20.
The keyword in the name fades with every rank
The share falls to 79.4% across the map pack, 72.9% at ranks 4 to 10 and 67.4% at ranks 11 to 20, reaching 64.4% at position 20. Even there, nearly two thirds of businesses carry the service word, which shows how common descriptive names are among local service businesses.

| Google Maps position | Service in name | City in name | Service and city |
|---|---|---|---|
| Map pack (1 to 3) | 79.4% | 18.4% | 16% |
| Ranks 4 to 10 | 72.9% | 13.9% | 11.3% |
| Ranks 11 to 20 | 67.4% | 12.4% | 9.2% |
A name that matches the search tells Google and the searcher at once that the business does what they need. For a customer scanning three names in a hurry, "Smith Plumbing" answers the question that "Smith and Sons" leaves open. Google's ranking and the customer's click point the same way.
Service plus city names are almost twice as common in the map pack
Names that contain both the service and the city, such as "Denver Roofing Pros", appear in 16% of map pack listings, against 11.3% at ranks 4 to 10 and 9.2% at ranks 11 to 20. City names alone show the same pattern: 18.4% of map pack names include the city, against 12.4% at ranks 11 to 20.
Most descriptive names are genuine: "Smith Plumbing" contains the word plumbing because that is what the business is called. The service-plus-city pattern is the one most often linked to keyword stuffing, where a business adds search words to its Google name that it does not use anywhere else. City names are most common in pest control (35.4%) and HVAC (33.8%) map packs, the fields where this pattern is most visible.
Trades name the service, law firms name the partners
How often the keyword appears depends on how each field names itself. 94.5% of veterinarians, 93.7% of roofers and 91.6% of pest control companies in the map pack carry the service in their name. Only 30.2% of personal injury lawyers do, because law firms are usually named after their partners.

In fields where nearly everyone carries the keyword, such as roofing or pest control, a descriptive name is the norm rather than an edge. In fields where few do, such as law, accounting and fitness, a business whose real name says what it does stands out in the map pack.
What this means for local business owners
Use your real business name on Google. If your legal name already includes your service, you benefit naturally. If it does not, the change has to be real: a registered trade name that you use on your signage, website, invoices and vehicles, not an edit to your Google listing alone. Adding words to your Google name that appear nowhere else breaks Google's rules and can get the listing suspended.
If you are choosing a name for a new business, a name that includes your main service gives you a head start in Google Maps and tells customers what you do at a glance.
Watch competitors who add keywords and cities to their Google names without using them anywhere else. You can suggest an edit on Google Maps or report the listing through Google's Business Redress Complaint Form. Our local seo packages include auditing competitor listings in your map pack and filing reports where the evidence supports it.
