Summary
A small business owner has just been served with a lawsuit. At lunch she searches for a business litigation attorney, opens a firm's website and wants to explain her situation in writing before she calls anyone. She finds a phone number and an office address. There is no form, no chat and no way to book a consultation, so she goes back to the search results.
A contact form is often the first real conversation a law firm has with a potential client. It lets a visitor describe the problem in their own words, at any hour, without the pressure of a phone call. Each field on that form is a question the visitor has to answer before the firm hears from them, so the form should ask for what the firm needs and nothing more.
46.9% of law firm websites offer no contact form, no online booking and no live chat on their main pages. Where law firms do have a form, it is fairly short: a median of 6 fields, the second shortest of the 6 industries.
What we measured
In September 2026 we checked the websites of 668 US law firms listed on Google Business Profiles, looking at each homepage and up to two linked pages. On each site we found the largest contact form and counted its fields, and we recorded whether the site had a tap-to-call link, online booking or live chat. 306 of the 668 law firm websites had a contact form. We compared law firms with five other industries: real estate, insurance, home services, SaaS and financial advisors.
A field is any box, dropdown, checkbox or text area a visitor can fill in, such as name, email, phone or "describe your case". We counted only forms with three or more fields, which leaves out search bars and newsletter sign-ups. The median is the middle form: half ask for fewer fields, half for more.
Nearly half of law firm websites offer only a phone number
On those sites, a visitor who is ready to act can only call during office hours or copy an email address. For someone searching for a lawyer at night or on a weekend, that means waiting or moving on to a firm that lets them send a message now.
45.8% of law firm websites have a contact form with three or more fields on their homepage or main pages. 63.6% have a tap-to-call link, a phone number that dials when tapped on a mobile phone, and 4.3% run live chat. The phone is the default route into most law firms, and the form is the main alternative for the visitor who does not want to call.
The typical law firm contact form asks for 6 fields
The median law firm contact form asks for 6 fields and the average is 6.8. Half of all law firm forms ask for between 5 and 7 fields, and one in ten asks for 10 or more. The most common length is 5 to 6 fields, used by 40.2% of forms, enough for a name, email, phone number, practice area and a message.

36.9% of law firm forms ask for 7 or more fields and 4.9% ask for 15 or more, the length of a full case questionnaire. 22.9% keep it to 3 or 4 fields. Compared with other industries, law firms keep forms short: their average of 6.8 fields is the second lowest of the 6 industries, ahead only of financial advisors at 6.6.
| Industry | Median fields | Forms with 7 or more fields |
|---|---|---|
| Real estate | 7 | 55.3% |

| SaaS | 6 | 42.7% |
| Insurance | 6 | 40.8% |
| Law firms | 6 | 36.9% |
| Financial advisors | 5 | 22.8% |

Forms on Wix law firm websites are also slightly shorter, with a median of 5 fields against 6 on WordPress. Wix includes a form builder in its editor, which makes a basic form the easy default, while WordPress sites need a form plugin added and set up.
What this means for law firms
If your website has no contact form on the homepage and main practice area pages, add one before you change anything else. Put it next to your phone number so visitors who do not want to call have an obvious alternative, and reply to every submission quickly, within an hour during business hours if you can.
Keep the form to the fields that decide how you respond: name, phone, email, practice area and a short description of the matter. Case details, dates and documents can wait for the consultation. If a field does not change who calls the lead back or how fast, cut it or make it optional.
Then test it on a phone the way a potential client would. Good law firm web design puts a short, clear form on every page where a visitor might decide to get in touch.
